Subj: Scholarship Opportunities

Please read the following scholarship list carefully. If you feel that you are eligible to apply for any of the scholarships, pick up an application in the Guidance Office from the Scholarship Table or access the listed website. If you are unable to find an application, notify the Guidance Office for assistance.

READ THE BULLETINS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS -- IF THERE ARE ANY DIFFERENCES IN THE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS AND THE BULLETIN DIRECTIONS, CHECK IN GUIDANCE FOR CLARIFICATION.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAILING THEIR OWN APPLICATIONS, UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED ON THIS BULLETIN. IN FAIRNESS TO ALL APPLICANTS, APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ESTABLISHED DEADLINES.

TIPS: Many local scholarship organizations suggest additional attachments to their applications. The following items are usually suggested and should be prepared in advance and be available to attach to your applications: 1. One to three letters of recommendation (may be from a teacher, coach, counselor, employer, or church / community member familiar with you and your community activities, etc.)(Ask permission to copy letters and keep them in a file) 2. Resume of your activities, awards, accomplishments, and community service throughout high school.(Make copies and keep them in a file) 3. Essay (brief, one-page) outlining your goals for the future and how your family will be impacted if you do not receive any financial help for college. (Keep on your computer ….ready to adjust for each scholarship application need) 4. Transcript – If your scholarship application is to be turned in to the Guidance Office, the transcript will be attached for you. If your application is to be mailed/submitted by you, complete a transcript request form and allow 2 – 3 days for processing.

1. John E. Kirk Aviation Scholarship - sponsored by the Crystal Aero Group, Inc., Crystal River - Provides private pilot training with Crystal Aero Group, Inc. leading to FAA certification as a Private Pilot - Airplane, Single Engine Land or advanced training of an equivalent value. Must: l. Be a Citrus County H/S senior in good standing 2. Be 17 yrs. old by March 1 of senior year 3. Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher 4. Have a strong interest in aviation career 5. Meet requirements of FAA 3rd Class physical 6. Waivers of items 2. and 3. may be considered Applications are available in the Guidance Office. Students are responsible to return completed applications to the Crystal Aero Group no later than September 7 th . NOTE: Applications need to be signed by your Guidance Counselor. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY TO REQUEST THEIR REVIEW AND SIGNATURE.

2. NASSP – Prudential Spirit of Community Award – Open to all grade levels – application on line at www.prudential.com/spirit Only two students may be nominated for competition for this national award. This program is designed to recognize youth solely on the basis of volunteer work in their communities. Once you have completed your online application, print it out, sign it, have a parent or guardian sign it, and then submit it to the Guidance Office by October 23 rd for judging. Nominees will have to file the final application online by November 2 nd . 3. Hispanic Scholarship Fund – www.hsf.net Multiple scholarship opportunities with varying deadlines. Applicaton period opens September 1 st .

4. St. Petersburg Times - BARNES Scholarship – www.tampabay.com/scholarships Four Awards up to $15,000/year for 4 years Scholarships offered to seniors who are strong academically, who have overcome significant hurdles in life to succeed and who want to attend their “dream school” out of state. Preference will be given to students who want to attend schools outside of Florida. Application deadline is October 15, 2009.

5. St. Petersburg Times - Journalism Scholarship – www.tampabay.com/scholarships

6. Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" - Based on financial need, leadership, and scholarship. This is an extensive application….It will be available on-line beginning September 1st and some applications should also be available in the Guidance Office. Check the web site for more info.www.elks.org/enf/scholars/ourscholarships.cfm Completed applications are due at the local Elk’s Lodge by November 2, 2009.

7. David Logan Memorial sponsored by Bay News 9 – Granted in memory of David Logan, former NFL player and Bay News 9 sportscaster. Winner is selected based upon academic and athletic accomplishments. Applications are available on-line at www.baynews9.com (Due date has not been updated on the website yet)

8. Horatio Alger - www.horatioalger.org Critical financial need (preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross family income) U.S. citizen Postmark deadline October 30, 2009.

10. Outstanding Students of America –www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com

11. AES Engineers scholarship essay. http://aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm Essay not to exceed 1,000 words is due not later than October 6, 2009.

12. Beverly Hills Lions Foundation – Multiple awards - Open to all college bound seniors. Completed applications are due in the Guidance Office not later than February 19, 2010.

13. Coca Cola Scholars – www.coca-colascholars.org October 31, 2009 deadline.
