* June 12-13, 2010 Fort Ancient Celebration Fort Ancient features 18,000 feet of earthen walls built 2,000 years ago by American Indians, the Hopewell. The Hopewell used the shoulder blades of deer, split elk antlers, clam shell hoes and digging sticks to dig the dirt. Then, carried the soil in baskets holding up to 40 pounds. * June 26-27, 2010 The Miami Valley Council for Native Americans 21st Annual Keeping the Tradition Powwow Saturday, June 27, 2009 10:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2009 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Grand entry at 12 noon and 5:00 p.m. Saturday, and 12 noon Sunday. During the Keeping the Tradition Pow Wow, the serene setting at SunWatch transforms with the beat of drums and the sound of American Indian music. For American Indians, Pow Wow is a special time to reflect upon a rich heritage and come into the Pow Wow circle with honor and respect for each other and the drum. The event features both men's and women's dances, including the men's grass dance and the women's shawl and jingle dance, performed wearing full regalia. In addition, traditional American Indian food and arts and crafts will be available from vendors. Admission is $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for Seniors (60+) and Students (6-17), and children under 5 are free. Because of the volumn of people through the gates it will make it much easier for you. While this is a three day event for the Atwood Fall Festival, the Pow-wow will be held on Oct. 2nd & 3rd.
VENDERS NOTE:
Venders are invited to set up for the full three days. This fall festival has a three day attendance of approximently 50,000 people. It is one of the largest events in the area, situated at beautiful Atwood Lake Park. Vender set up for Fri. Oct. 1st is on Thurs. Sept. 30th., after 6:00pm. ALL VENDERS MUST BE SET UP BY 9:00AM, SAT. * NAIVC Youth Program, and Community Craft/Regalia Night the 1 st Thursday of Each Month. NAIVC Youth Program will work to reconnect our youth with Native traditions and culture by connecting our youth in the community with mentors (men and women) who will teach and share their tribal beliefs, crafts, and skills with our urban youth.
Community Craft/Regalia Night is an allotted time for the community to work on their regalia, while enjoying fun activities, fellowship, and good food. Public invited. Location: 655 N. * NAIVC SINGERS Program: 3 rd Thursday of Each Month. The purpose of the NAIVC Singers is to establish an intertribal community-based drum group that will actively embrace the songs and values of various nations and be recognized as an urban drum rather than committing itself as a northern, southern, or eastern drum. The main focus of the drum will be to create a safe, drug-free medium for youth and adults while providing an opportunity to educate and explore Native culture. Public invited. Location: 655 N.
