December 21 Gateway To The Refuge: Winter Stream Ecology* 10 am Sneak up along the pristine trout filled Freeland Run. Get wet with stream ecologist and friend Ben Stout as he shares with us his deep love and understanding for these Appalachian streams. Dec 28 Care Free SnowShoe Tour 1 pm - Never know what sorta lore will roll out as we roam along Freeland Run and great parts of the Refuge. These events are free and include snowshoes. Dec 28 Hash Ski 2 pm Ready Kilowatt and Biff Stoski will likely out smart the hounds in this wild game of pursuit. Many More Hash Skis throughout the season! Jan 28- 30 West Virginia Special Olympics Winter Games : Gathered are racers from three states, parents, coaches, volunteers, and helpers. This event will give back tenfold what is put in.We plan to support this event year after year. Jan 31 Women’s Winter Ski Day * 8 am * Even with or without fresh snow there is crisp mountain air and lots to learn. Ease into it with a total beginner course or face the challenge of a more advanced day that covers skating and telemarking. February 1 Hash Ski 2pm at National Nordic with Matt Marcus call 259-5424 February 2 Ground Hog's Day Ski Our annual trek in search for clues to the rest of winter never seems to end. Full day backcountry journeys usually have no route in mind and end up a little lost. Or real kinda lost like a lot of years. I lost a glove and Ben snapped his tails. February 6 Full Moon skiing 7:30pm and all week February 8 Gateway To The Refuge: Canaan Valley A National Natural Landmark: 10 am Dave Saville has a deep and rich personal understanding of this amazingly high windy and cold region. Not only the history, the natural wonders, yet also a life long personal involvement in helping preserve these highlands. February 8 25K Mountain State Marathon * 1 pm BB Biathlon following... This rolling course has been revised to ease the vertical as racers tackle the Springer Orchard or settle for an even shortened version. Kid’s classes, great prizes, and all day discounts at the fantastic cafe. A deal considering a $12 entry fee. Fully groomed for classic or skate, we need MANY more folks for this one! The region’s coolest least known winter event. Prizes out weigh the price of admission. Tell your friends! February 13-15 NATO Telemark Adventure Tour * 8 am Guided instructional tours into the Dolly Sods with Dick Hall and whitegrass staffers. Plenty of technique secrets spilled out from the world's most favorite ski elf. Feb 15 CareFree SnowShoe Tour* 1pm Usually very interesting. Mostly natural history and local lore.
