Abstract Woodpecker species whose cavities are most usurped by Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are widespread and generalists in their use of habitats. These include primarily woodpeckers that are similar in size to or slightly larger than the starling – such as the Great-spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) of Eurasia and the Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) and Red-bellied (Melanerpes carolinus) and Red-headed (M. erythrocephalus) Woodpeckers of North America. Usurpation occurs primarily in human-dominated urban, suburban and exurban habitats with pastures, sports fields and other open areas that serve as prime feeding habi tats for starlings. Starlings prefer high, more exposed cavities with a minimal entrance diameter relative to their body size. Usurpation success depends on timing – optimally just as a cavity is completed and before egg-lay- ing by the woodpeckers. Starlings likely reduce woodpecker populations in more open, human-dominated habi- tats. Woodpecker habitat losses and fragmentation are more serious problems that enhance habitat quality for star- lings and reduce habitat quality for most woodpeckers. The only woodpeckers that might become in danger of extinction as a primary result of starling cavity usurpation are likely island species with small populations. -

This chapter treats adult thrasher survival, longevity, short- and long-range natal dispersal of the young, including the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of natal dispersers, and a comparison of the field techniques used in monitoring the spatiotemporal aspects of dispersal, e.g., observations, biotelemetry, and banding. Rounding out the chapter are some of the inherent and ecological factors influencing immature thrashers’ survival and dispersal, e.g., preferred habitat, diet, season, ectoparasites, and the effects of two major hurricanes, which resulted in food shortages following both disturbances. Annual Survival Rates (Rain-Forest Population) In the early 1990s, the tenet that tropical birds survive much longer than their north temperate counterparts, many of which are migratory, came into question (Karr et al. 1990). Whether or not the dogma can survive, however, awaits further empirical evidence from additional studies. -

Leonard, Jr. University of Florida, Gainesville Julie A. Heath Boise State University Abstract Links between morphology and foraging strategies have been well established for many vertebrate groups. Foraging strategies of Melanerpes woodpeckers are especially variable, with at least six species being proficient flycatchers; the remainder of the better known species do not flycatch. Our objective was to examine variation in foraging tactics as it relates to skull morphology and other life history traits among these species to better understand the biology of these diverse woodpeckers. We measured eight skull characters from 241 individuals representing 19 species, but focused on eight species for which we had the most data. We used the log-geometric mean and a principal components analysis (PCA) to calculate size-scaled shape variables. Cluster analysis based on PCA scores clearly separated birds by foraging behavior. JOHNSTON The West Indian Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes superciliaris) is widely distributed in the West Indian region, occurring on Cuba, Isle of Pines, Grand Cayman, Grand Bahama, Abaco, and San Salvador (Wat- lings)’ Island. Because of its extensive distribution in contrast to other Antillean woodpeckers (Bond 1956, Cruz 1974), M. superciliaris is an exceptionally good species for studies of geographic variation in foraging behavior, in differential sexual foraging related to regional variation in quality and quantity of food, and in intensity of interactions with other woodpeckers and species of similar foraging adaptations. To date, M. superciliaris remains little known; the primary literature, with the excep- tion of the Grand Cayman subspecies (A4. s. caymanensis), consists almost entirely of brief accounts (Gundlach 1893, Allen 1905, Bangs and Zappey 1905, Riley 1905, Barbour 1923, Paulson 1966, Brudenell-Bruce 1975, Garrido and Garcia Montaiia 1975, Miller 1978, King 198 1). Johnston (1970, 1975) and Cruz and Johnston (1979) summarized aspects of the ecology of M. supercdiaris on Grand Cayman, and Cruz (1974) discussed the probable evolution and fossil record of AL superciliaris. The present study of M. superciliaris was initiated on Grand Cayman in 1965 and continued intermittently until 1974, covering all seasons. A total of 800 h was spent in the field. The objectives of these investigations were to obtain data on: (1) distribution and habitat preferences, (2) food and foraging ecology, and (3) differential feeding between the sexes. -

PUERTO RICO plus St Kitts and St Lucia December 2019 Introduction and planning With a number of endemic birds plus an endemic family, Puerto Rico is a fabulous birding destination with a network of good birding sites, forest, lakes, mangrove and lowland scrub. In September 2017 the island was ravaged by Hurricane Maria which resulted in thousands of deaths and the loss of millions of trees. Two years on, Puerto Rico is absolutely open for business, and there is little evidence of the destruction wrought with power restored, and roads and bridges re-built. The main impact we saw was at El Yunque where most of the reserve’s natural forest had been flattened. With Denise finding a bargain cruise through Cruise Nation which included 3 nights in Puerto Rico (costing not much more than we could get flights for!) we were finally able to visit the island and do our bit to support the economy as tourists. As we needed longer in Puerto Rico to see the key birds, we added 4 nights to our stay. We were aware that December was not an ideal time to visit and seeing Antillean Nighthawk and Caribbean Martin would have to wait for a future trip elsewhere in the West Indies. We also knew we would not see Black-whiskered Vireo, common between February and October, but we hoped to pick this up in the Lesser Antilles where they are resident. We also knew that with the cruise only taking in St Kitts, St Lucia and Barbados we would need to return to the Lesser Antilles one day for Forest Thrush. -

Zool. Fennici 43: 86–95. The main aim of this paper is to examine and discuss the global pattern of woodpecker diversity from a conservation perspective. In addition, I review ecological traits and the conservation status of the entire family Picidae, and relate these factors to the human driven change in their habitats. Finally, I present a global overview of the research on woodpeckers in order to identify the major gaps in our knowledge which render the management of populations of these species difficult. The hotspots of woodpecker spe- cies richness identified by GIS were found in tropical and subtropical forests of South- East Asia, South and Central America, and equatorial Africa. Most of these hotspots were located in developing countries. However, almost 90% of articles published in 1985–2004 encompassed studies performed in North America and Europe, that is, in geographic areas harbouring only 17% of the global number of Picidae species.
