Recommended Citation Gerbracht, J., and A. Levesque. 2019. The complete checklist of the birds of the West Indies: v1.1. BirdsCaribbean Checklist Committee. www.birdscaribbean.org/caribbean-birds/ Introduction The Complete Checklist of the Birds of the West Indies aims to document all of the of birds observed in the West Indies along with the species status in a number of different categories, including abundance, seasonality, breeding status, endemism and establishment. It will provide a source of information on the abundance and diversity of West Indian avifauna. Its goal is to provide consistent, accurate and up to date information for use by researchers, conservationists and policy makers.

The of questions we often hear are: How many species of birds have been seen in the West Indies? How many species are endemic to the Lesser ? What is the diversity of breeding birds? How many are established in a ?

These questions sound simple but can be very difficult to accurately answer without sifting through numerous recently published sources of information covering the entire West Indies region. Sadly, there are few publications covering the West Indies and they are traditionally books or journal articles which are often out of date shortly after they are published. One of the goals for this checklist is to provide a single source of up-to-date information about the status of birds in the West Indies. Table 1 includes a variety of statistics that can be easily retrieved from this checklist. “Living” is the number of species currently living in the West Indies, you may notice that the numbers for Established Introduced Species are different between “Living” and “Total” and there are no Extinct species, this is due to 4 species which were previously established in the region which have subsequently become extirpated from the region. Table 1 Category Living Extinct Total

This initial version of the Checklist is CERTAINLY not the end point, rather it is the starting point. Birds do not stay in one place, nor are their populations static. By the time this checklist is printed, it will also be out of date with new species added, new breeding populations discovered and sadly, some species will become extirpated from the region. Updates to the checklist will be published annually and a ‘living’ version, updated throughout the year, will be available on the BirdsCaribbean website. Additionally, we plan to enhance and make additions to these checklists over time, by adding additional categorizations that are useful to the ornithology and community in the Caribbean and by detailing similar information for .

In addition to the single, overarching West Indies checklist, there are/will be checklists specific to the countries of the Caribbean. These checklists will provide broader coverage for the larger Caribbean region and will include checklists for , , , and Curaçao. Each checklist will include a comprehensive species list for the region and associated information using the categorizations developed for this checklist. Several regional checklists adopting these methods are already available, e.g. the Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Cuba, or will soon be available.

Checklist Methods and Definitions The checklist takes the format of tables in an Excel spreadsheet and include each ‘Listed Species’ and relevant data in the categories defined below. Worksheet 1 within the spreadsheet includes a complete list of species which are naturally occurring or have an established, self-sustaining population. Worksheet 2 provides a list of species which have been observed free flying in the region yet are not established. Hypothetical records in the region, meaning there isn’t enough information about the record to conclusively include a species on the checklist, are detailed in worksheet 3. We have provided the checklist in an Excel spreadsheet so the lists can be easily sorted based on categories of interest to each individual. In addition to the Excel spreadsheet, these three tables are included below.

It is important to review the definitions detailed below to be able to understand and interpret the different values associated with each species. For example, a seasonality of Year-round is not the same as a Resident. Some species are Year-round Visitors meaning they occur in the West Indies throughout the year, yet do not spend their entire life cycle within the West Indies, this applies to many shorebirds which are seen year-round but breed exclusively in the .

The following bold headings align with the different columns of data within the checklist itself. Underlined headings below are a list of possible values for each species for the associated bold heading. The spreadsheet format itself allows for the sorting and aggregation of species based on the values in these columns.

Criteria for Inclusion For a species to be included as a ‘Listed Species’ in the main checklist (Worksheet 1) or the ‘Non- established’ list (Worksheet 2), it must meet a minimum set of criteria. A species is added to the West Indies checklist when there is a specimen, clearly distinctive sound recording, diagnostic 2 photograph or a precise description which fits distinctive field marks and clearly distinguishes this species from similar species.

Geographic Coverage or ‘What is included in the West Indies?’ The West Indies Area is defined, following Raffaele et al. (1998) A Guide to the Birds of the West Indies as including the Bahama Islands, Turks and Caicos, the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles (ending with Grenada in the south), Providencia and San Andres. It does not include Bermuda, and , Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, and Swan Islands.

Taxonomic Sort The in which taxa are sorted. This is based on the most current version of the Clements Checklist of birds of the world. This column can be used to sort the spreadsheets taxonomically.

Common Name The English common name for each species as defined by the most current version of the Clements Checklist of birds of the world.

Scientific Name The scientific name for each species as defined by the most current version of the Clements Checklist of birds of the world.

Endemic This details the type of endemism for each of the endemic species in the West Indies. For this checklist, we have added several new categorizations of ‘endemism’ as we felt that the single endemic definition failed to capture the interesting subtleties within a list of endemic species. Note: this column will remain empty for species not considered as endemics within the West Indies region.

Resident Endemic: A species that is native to a limited geographical region and which occurs naturally nowhere else, i.e., Inagua Woodstar in Great and Little Inagua, Bahamas. Thus, a West Indies Resident Endemic both breeds and resides entirely within the West Indies. The vast majority of Endemics fall into this category. Breeding Endemic: A species that is native to, and its breeding is completely restricted to a specific geographical region within the West Indies. In the current checklist only three species fall in this category: and which breed only in Cuba and the Greater Antilles respectively, and whose winter ranges are unknown, and Black-capped Petrel which breeds in Hispaniola and possibly but ranges through the western Atlantic and much of the . Non-breeding Endemic: A species that is native to, and its non-breeding range is completely restricted to a specific geographical region within the West Indies. In the current checklist only three species fall in this category: i.e., Kirtland’s Warbler which winters in , Bicknell’s

3 which winters in the eastern Greater Antilles and the extinct Bachman’s Warbler which wintered in Cuba. Near Endemic: A species where the population is native and almost entirely restricted to a specific geographical region within the West Indies, but which can occur in small numbers in surrounding , i.e., Western in the Greater Antilles (also occurs on )

Endemic Region The endemic region is the most restrictive overarching region of endemism for each endemic species. For example, a species that occurs in both the Greater and Lesser Antilles is considered a West Indian endemic whereas a species which is endemic to Cuba and Hispaniola is considered a Greater Antilles endemic. West Indies: A species that is not restricted to a single region listed below but is restricted to islands in the West Indies as defined above. Greater Antilles: A species that is restricted to islands in the Greater Antilles: Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands. Lesser Antilles: A species that is restricted to islands in the Lesser Antilles: The islands south of the Anegada Passage, from Anguilla to Grenada. Lucayan: A species that is restricted to islands in the Lucayan Archipelago, i.e. the Bahamas and ). Western Caribbean: A species restricted to the western Caribbean, i.e. the Colombian islands of San Andres y Providencia.

Distribution This category lists the countries where an endemic or an exotic/introduced species occurs. and country-specific endemics will have only one country listed. The exception will be those species which occur on the island of Hispaniola. The species which occur in both and the will have a designation of ‘Hispaniola’. Note: This category is currently populated for endemic and exotic species only. The distribution of other naturally occurring resident and migratory species will be detailed in the associated country checklists as those individual checklists become available. Additionally, the range maps within eBird Caribbean, available online at https://ebird.org/caribbean/ provide exceptional map-based views of species distributions in the West Indies.

Seasonality Year-round: A species is likely to occur throughout the entire year. Summer: A species is likely to occur in the summer season (June– September). Winter: A species is likely to occur in the Northern Hemisphere winter season (November– February), often includes some portion of migration seasons (September–October and March– May).

4 Migrant: A species is likely to occur in the West Indies only on passage, during the Northern Hemisphere migration seasons (September–October and March–May). Unknown: A species for which there is insufficient information to determine its seasonality within the West Indies. Note: The month ranges given here are guidelines only. Because of differing life histories and geographic ranges, many species have different timings of migration and the actual month ranges for these seasonality values will be different across the geographic range of the species. For example, White-tailed Tropicbird, which we classify as ‘Summer’ actually arrives on the Cayman Islands in December/January and departs August/September. Additionally, we have left Seasonality ‘unknown’ for some species where the available information did not provide a clear pattern.

Resident Status Resident: A species that spends its entire lifecycle within a region. Visitor: A species that does not spend its entire life cycle within a region, but moves into and out of the region for portions of its lifecycle.

Abundance “The relative density with which a species occurs in the appropriate .” The abundance or relative density combined with how easy it is to detect a species determines the likelihood of a species being observed when it is present. A low abundance species with high detectability, ”easy to see”, may be observed even more frequently than a high abundance species with low detectability.

Note: The abundance categories for an individual species in the overarching West Indies checklist are the ‘highest’ level of abundance within the region. Due to the highly variable nature of a species’ abundance across the West Indies, country checklists should be consulted for more accurate regional abundance measures. Common: A species that occurs in high densities, e.g., Bananaquit. Fairly Common: A species that occurs in moderate densities, e.g., Common Gallinule, Belted Kingfisher. Uncommon: A species that occurs in low densities, e.g., Gundlach’s , Osprey. Rare: A species that occurs in very low densities or is an occasional visitor (individuals present on average not more than twice a year and at least once every 5 years), e.g., Sharp-shinned Hawk, Curlew Sandpiper. Very Rare: A species that occurs in extremely low densities or is a rare visitor or vagrant to the region (individuals present on average less than once every 5 years), e.g., Hook-billed Kite (Cuban subspecies), Common Ringed Plover. Extirpated: A species that has become extinct locally, e.g., at the island/country level, or regional level, but still exists on other islands or countries (e.g., West Indian Whistling-Duck, Giant and from some regions of the West Indies) or species which are no longer present in the entire West Indies region. Only a few exotics fall into this latter category currently, e.g., . 5 Extinct: A species that is extinct globally, e.g., Brace’s Emerald, .

Breeding Status Breeding: A species that reproduces within a specific region. Non-Breeding: A species that does not reproduce within a specific region.

Introduced We generally follow the British Ornithologist Union set of definitions for introduced species. https://www.bou.org.uk/british-list/species-categories/

Category C "A species whose presence results from a introduction." There are six further categorization of Category C species which provide additional detail regarding its current status as an introduced species.

Established Exotic (C1): A species with a self-sustaining population that occurs only as a result of introduction(s), e.g., Java Sparrow. Augmented Exotic (C2): A species with a self-sustaining population resulting from introduction(s), where some individuals could occur in a natural state, e.g., American Flamingo. Reintroduction (C3): A species with populations successfully re-established in areas of former occurrence, e.g., Puerto Rican in Rio Abajo. Feral Exotic (C4): Domesticated species with populations established in the wild, e.g., Rock Pigeon, Red Junglefowl. Vagrant Exotic (C5): A species seen as a vagrant from an established introduced population. e.g., Egyptian Goose observed in Bahamas as a vagrant from a C1 population in . Extirpated Exotic (C6): An introduced species which formerly had self-sustaining population that are either no longer self-sustaining or are considered extirpated, e.g., Red Siskin.

Category D Species that would otherwise appear as a Listed Species except that there is reasonable doubt that they have ever occurred in a natural state or are self-sustaining. Category D is a holding category and is not intended to be a long-term assignment of any species. These species are reviewed regularly with a view to add them as a Listed Species or assign them to Category E. Species placed in Category D are included in Worksheet 2”

Category E “Species recorded as introductions, human-assisted transportees or escapees from captivity, and whose breeding populations (if any) are thought not to be self-sustaining.” These non-established exotic species are included in Worksheet 2, e.g., Sun Parakeet.

IUCN Status IUCN Red List categorizations of species are based on specific criteria and aim to provide an objective method to classify species and other taxa based on risk of extinction. This column of data 6 reflects the most current IUCN status for the global population of each species. The following are the categories from the second edition of the IUCN Red List of Categories and Criteria, version 3.1.

Extinct (EX) A species is “Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died.” Extinct in the wild (EW) A species “is known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity or as a naturalized population (or populations) well outside the past range.” Critically Endangered (CR) A species is “considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.” Endangered (EN) A species is “considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild.” Vulnerable (VU) A species is “considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.“ Near Threatened (NT) A species “does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable now, but is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.” Least Concern (LC) A species “does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.” Data Deficient (DD) A species “is Data Deficient when there is inadequate information to make a direct, or indirect, assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution and/or population status.” Not evaluated (NE) A species “is Not Evaluated when it has not yet been evaluated against the criteria.”

Island/Country Listing Additional columns within the “Listed Species” and “Non-established” worksheets have been included for each country within the West Indies. Each species that has an accepted record in eBird Caribbean for each country has been tagged with a ‘1’. We understand and acknowledge that these initial ‘country’ lists are incomplete and we encourage both historic and new records to be entered into eBird Caribbean to work towards a comprehensive and complete listing of species for each country within the region. We have added Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and Bermuda to this section even though they are not included in the West Indies for the purposes of this checklist and have indicated the West Indies species which have eBird Caribbean observations.

Dedication We would especially like to thank Tony White and dedicate this checklist in his honor. His tireless work in the Bahamas and the West Indies has been an inspiration for both of us. As a long-time editor for the Caribbean section of North American Birds, he contributed his passion for and extensive knowledge of West Indian birdlife. In maintaining the ‘official’ list of Bahamian birds, he consistently adopted a critical view and required a high level of quality in rarity documentation, and in the process, taught us to become better and more careful observers of the natural world. The last time we talked with Tony during the 2015 BirdsCaribbean meeting in Jamaica, he was enthusiastic about these efforts and excited to see the West Indies checklist becoming a reality. We miss him dearly and can only strive to live up to the standards he rigorously applied.

Jeff and Anthony

Acknowledgements Anthony and I would like to thank all of the members of the Checklist Working Group who have contributed their knowledge and experience and have truly created this checklist. Every individual made significant contributions to the creation of this initial checklist from refining definitions to including detailed information on individual species. We would especially like to thank Herb Raffaele, Nils Navarro and Christine Rose-Smyth for many lively discussions around defining the categorizations and other minutia of producing a checklist such as this. Nils and Christine have both produced country level checklists which has been invaluable in refining and testing the categorizations used within this checklist. Tony White, Alcides Morales-Pérez, José Colón-López, Sergio Colon and Ann Sutton and many others have all provided their valuable insights and detailed knowledge of the avifauna within their respective countries and the West Indies region as a whole.

We also wish to thank the numerous individuals who use and contribute to eBird Caribbean, both who live in the West Indies and those who visit for a few glorious days. Every sighting entered expands our knowledge of the region’s birds. eBird Caribbean observers have greatly contributed to and will continue to contribute to this checklist and its future editions. Jessica Rozek Cañizares really stepped in at the last minute and helped us get the checklist into a nice format for sharing. Lastly, a special thanks to Lisa Sorenson and BirdsCaribbean for starting off this effort and providing us the flexibility and support that made this checklist possible.
