Camhi, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools (516) 434-6010❖FAX (516) 434-6803 May 7, 2021 Dear Baldwin Families, As we head into the final months of the school year, I am proud to share some of our latest achievements and incredible news about our school district. Eight months ago, we never could have imagined getting to this point without closing. The fact that we have remained open this entire school year should make us all very proud because each of us helped to make this happen. Graduation and Moving Up Ceremonies We are finalizing the plans for our Baldwin High School graduation ceremony—which we will hold outside and in- person—the prom, as well as our moving up ceremonies for the middle school and elementary schools. We are awaiting the updated guidelines from the Governor’s Office. As we plan these events, please remember that the health and safety of our students, families, faculty and staff are of the utmost importance. We will follow the mandated guidance set by the Governor’s Office. Our families will receive final details shortly. Information about our senior events will continue to be made available on our Class of 2021 site: www.baldwinschools.org/classof2021 Budget Vote and Election Remember that the upcoming budget vote and school board election are Tuesday, May 18th, 7 am to 10 pm, at the District Office, 960 Hastings Street. Our Budget Presentation Roadshows continue to take place. If you have yet to attend one, please visit www.baldwinschools.org/budgetinfo for future dates, as well as for more information on the proposed budget and vote. Physical distancing and masks will be required. Please come out and vote! Planning for Next Year By the end of June, you should receive more information on what to expect for next year. As new guidance and information is available, we will certainly keep you informed. Inclusivity and Equity in Education More than ever, the board of education and district administration, faculty and staff are committed to ensuring inclusivity and equity in our instructional programs and school culture. To highlight some of our initiatives, we have dedicated a section on our website: www.baldwinschools.org/equity Please check back regularly to see the latest updates. Update on Mental Wellness Resources May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and with everything happening in the world today, we need to pay extra attention to our mental wellness and others. If you feel there is any cause for concern about your child, please do not hesitate contact your child’s school or our Pupil Services Department. We are continuing to work in partnership with Molloy College and offering the “Social-Emotional Mental Health & Wellness Workshops” for students. Information on this and more can be found on our website: www.baldwinschools.org/mentalwellness. We are Innovative…We are Inclusive…We are Involved…We are Baldwin! Teacher Appreciation Week As we come to the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge our exceptional faculty and staff. When I listen to the news and hear stories of school systems that have not yet opened or people who are struggling to get through this year, I am forever grateful to be part of this Baldwin family. On this Teacher Appreciation Week, which I would like to expand the concept to School Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week. Please join me in thanking these incredible individuals for their trust, courage, resilience, faith, dedication, and determination. Supporting each other, our students, their families, and our community, and standing together as one, has never been so important and we now have proof that it works. Working with children and young adults is of the noblest professions there is and the caliber at which it is done in Baldwin cannot be compared. And now let’s see What’s Bruin in Baldwin! Baldwin High School Recognized by U.S. News and World Report Despite all of the challenges the 2020-2021 school year has brought us, we are still ending on a high note. I am proud to announce that once again, Baldwin High School was among the 2,053 New York State High schools to be ranked among U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools,” moving up from #383 to #322 on the list! These rankings are based on the school’s performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. Just to clarify, the data collected is based solely on AP and IB credits and does not yet consider dual enrollment or college-level courses. I am proud to share that there are 662 filled “seats” in dual enrollment courses taken at Baldwin High School. This means that many of our students will go on to their college of choice with course credits already in hand, helping them to gain a head start while also decreasing tuition costs and possible student loan debt. Best Communities for Music Education For the fifth consecutive year, we have proudly received the designation of “Best Communities for Music Education” from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Go Baldwin! Collaboration with Public Media After much anticipation, Baldwin UFSD will soon be featured on a full 30-minute episode of WNET’s MetroFocus, a television program featuring news, conversations, and in-depth reporting about New York communities. WNET is America's flagship PBS station: parent company of New York's THIRTEEN, WLIW21, WLIW-FM and operator of NJ PBS. The segment will air on all of these channels. As chair of the WLIW ETSC Committee, I have shared the work of Baldwin, and the “powers that be” at WNET are excited to share our success with their audience. Additionally, Baldwin High School students, Ashley Ganesh, Kourtney Bobb and Kiara Quamina and alum, Nicolette Carrion, were recently selected to participate in the WNET Youth Collective 2021 Summit “Youth Ethics Table: From Passion to Action.” A recording of the summit is available on YouTube. This week, we proudly unveiled Baldwin Union Free School District's latest innovative endeavor – “Hello Neighbor” (pictured above) – a collaboration between Baldwin High School AP Photography students and Brookside Elementary School second graders that was inspired by artist Julie Keefe and her community-wide We are Innovative…We are Inclusive…We are Involved…We are Baldwin! project. Our project captured the attention of NBC and PIX11. We will continue to expand on this effort by working with a new elementary school each year. Watch the full news story here: https://bit.ly/3h2dv1c A special kudos to Meadow Elementary School, who raised $600 to donate to the Nassau and Suffolk Autism Society of America by selling masks made by a fellow Meadow student and her grandmother. As part of their life science coursework, Baldwin Middle School seventh graders recently “broke ground” in the courtyard and started building their first native garden. This is the first year for the gardens at the middle school, which was designed last year by the current eighth grade class. Now all five elementary schools, in addition to the middle school, have gardens to study and work with all year long as part of Baldwin UFSD’s unique, hands-on science curriculum. For National Poetry Month, Steele Elementary School students, K-5, wrote original works of poetry and shared their creations within the classroom and school-wide community. This week, Plaza Elementary School has been hosting their very first College & Career Week. Mr. Mark Gray, principal, and Ms. Jaclyn Graham, assistant principal, created a special website filled with live sessions, recorded videos, interactive Padlets, and Flipgrids featuring our Plaza parents, staff, and alumni so both in-person and remote students could participate! Eight-time Emmy-award winner, Anthony Jimenez, prerecorded a video to share how he became a producer of the highest rated show for the MLB network and executive producer of the Zone. Remember to visit our website and connect with us on social media to see all of the wonderful and exciting things happening within our schools: www.baldwinschools.org/news Please continue to check your email, as you will most likely receive more frequent communications as we approach the final days of this school year. Have a wonderful weekend. Happy Mother’s Day to all! With sincerity and appreciation, Shari L. Camhi We are Innovative…We are Inclusive…We are Involved…We are Baldwin! .

  • As More Universities Began Offering Courses Online, It Becomes
ALN 2002 EMPOWERING INSTRUCTORS TO GET THEIR COURSES ONLINE Presented by Blake Haggerty, Kenneth Ronkowitz and Bill Reynolds, New Jersey Institute of Technology em·pow·er ( m-pou r) tr.v. em·pow·ered, em·pow·er·ing, em·pow·ers 1. To equip or supply with an ability; to enable. Introduction As universities offer more online courses and even entire degrees, it becomes difficult to rely only on the “early adopters” who are comfortable embracing new technologies and pedagogies. As the demand for online courses increases, it is becoming necessary to “encourage” instructors who may not have any experience with web-based learning to develop and mentor online courses. The prospect of creating and teaching an online course can be a daunting proposition for these instructors, especially if they are just getting the hang of checking their e-mail and surfing the web. This presentation will outline how the relatively small Instructional Technology and Media Services (ITMS) department at NJIT works with faculty to empower them to move online. Because of the small size of our department, and the number of online courses that we produce, we are unable to assign staff to work exclusively one-on-one with faculty throughout the semester. This can be problematic given the fact that we frequently work with instructors that are unfamiliar with online learning and who do no have the knowledge/skills necessary to get their course material in a format that is appropriate for electronic distribution. In order to serve the faculty, we have implemented a program that incorporates multiple steps over a longer period of time that is aimed at empowering the faculty to move their course entirely online.
