CHALLENGING WORDS

SUMMARY

A fog over a small village for three days. The anticipation for it to pass was great. Children loved playing hide-and-seek among the gray-wrapped rocks. --- Conversation Questions---

(1) Show me a part in the book that you really liked. Why? (Answer) Any logical response. (Follow Up) Have coach show his/her favorite part and tell why.

(2) Imagine you are a lobsterman, what do you suppose you could see at sea? (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Name some things you could collect at the beach.

(3) Search for the page showing what the lobsterman did on the first day. (Answer) On page 11. Painting buoys and mending lobster pots. (Follow Up) If you were in a situation where you could not go anywhere, what would you do?

(4) Why did the children like the fog so much? (Answer) It made it more fun to play hide-and-seek. (Follow Up) Share your favorite outside game to play.

(5) Imagine what it feels like to be on a sailboat on open water. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Tell me what other kinds of boats might you see in the water?

(6) What could the fathers have done the second day instead of scowl and complain? (Answer) Any logical response. (Follow Up) Share some activities you like to do with one of your parents.

(7) Find what the lobsterman said the second day. (Answer) “The worst fog in twenty years.” (Follow Up) How would this fog affect fishermen?

(8) Look for what happened the third day. (Answer) The western sun slanted through, clearing the fog. (Follow Up) How do you feel when it is gloomy outside and the sun begins to shine?

(9) Explain what spoddled means. (Answer) Playing in the lazy lapping waves. (Follow Up) Share some things you can do at the beach.

(10) Where did all the families go when the fog disappeared? (Answer) The Beach. (Follow Up) Do you like the beach? Activities

1. Draw a picture with fog. Write about what is going on in the picture.

2. See how many different words you can make using letters from the title of the story.

Introductions

1. Have coach hide while someone else goes to get the student. Let the student try to find you. Tell them that today we will read about something that hides things. Let’s read and find out what it is.

2. Have words that describe fog, hidden in a bag. Allow the students to choose a word from the bag and see if the child can guess what you are describing. Tell them that we will read about a type of weather that can hide lots of things. Let’s read and find out what it is.
