ART III Syllabus: yearlong, one credit course Ms. Teaford, MFA, Department Chair, Visual Arts PREFERRED MODE OF COMMUNICATION: [email protected] Phone messages with secretary (703) 228—5368.

David Hockney This course is designed for those students who are seriously interested in the study of art. Students should understand that Art III work involves significantly more commitment and industry than the typical high school course--- the program is not designed for the casually interested. The portfolio (the body of work) produced is inclusive of works in a wide and diverse range of art forms. Students are asked to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of areas, including drawing, painting, printmaking, color and design, and if desired by the student, in 3-d works as well.

Emphasis is placed on quality of work and breath of expression. Students will produce work that is either based on a teacher directed theme or a subject of their own choosing to fulfill the required assignment. Much latitude is given to size, media, and style of expression. Students should feel comfortable in experimenting with media and style and are encouraged to do so.

At various times, students will also research works of major artists whose work they admire and wish to emulate, and whose work pertains to the assignment at hand. The study of the art that has gone before us is an integral part of their artistic education.

GRADE DETERMINANTS: Students will be graded on each assigned project. Unlike Art I and II where process is paramount in grade determination, in Art III as well as APSA, the final artwork, the goals and the rubric are the grade determinates. The goals of each project will be made clear. Rubrics must be respected. Individual instruction as well as class critiques will be used to help students evaluate progress. Students will be given the opportunity after the critique to “tweak” their final product. Grading will be summative. The following criteria will be used to grade each project: A. achievement of goal objectives B. quality and craftsmanship C. originality, creativity D. work ethic E. completion in a timely manner as part of the learning process.

1 STUDIO ASSIGNMENTS: are a continuation of work done in the studio classroom and all art work will be evaluated on the same scale. These assignments (which often will include work done in their journals/ sketchbooks) are not busy work but an integral part of the educational and artistic experience.

APS GRADING SCALE Letter Percentages Quality Points AP & IB Grade Quality Points A 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 4.0 5.0 100 B+ 87, 88, 89 3.5 4.5 B 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86 3.0 4.0 C+ 77, 78, 79 2.5 3.5 C 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76 2.0 3.0 D+ 67, 68, 69 1.5 2.5 D 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 1.0 2.0 E 0-59 0.0 0.0

Student grades reflect student achievement and not student behavior. Quarterly grades will round up when the percentage is .5 or higher. In addition to achievement, work habits as noted in the report card comments will be evaluated for each course using the following symbols: + - Surpasses Expectations # - Meets Expectations ^ - Approaching Expectations N - Needs Improvement The final grade is required to be calculated using the quality points and not percentages, letter grades, number or point systems. No one is excused from the final exam.

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO: 1. keep a sketchbook/journal 2. visit an art gallery or museum each quarter (30 points). Extra credit will be given for a second visit… 3. complete all projects assigned 4. participate in all county and school art shows 5. pay a lab fee of $35 if financially able, to cover the cost of professional models’ fees, stipends for visiting artists, enrichment supplies etc. I will be giving each student erasers, a drawing pencil, pastels, and brushes

ABSENCES: 1. All excused tardies and absences are of course, excused but all work must be made up 2. If a student is excused absent or tardy more than three days (or 3 times collectively), he/she must make up the time in the studio. These are studio courses that require many hours of intensive work. 3. All excused absences must be made up within the time period as stated in APS regulations. A grade of E will be assigned for all work missed because of unexcused absences or tardies. 3. The studio is available during lunches, most mornings before school, and a few afternoons a week.
