A. Course Description 1. Catalog description. This course is the third of a four-part sequence in Jazz Improvisation. It is meant to offer music majors a continuation of the Jazz Improvisation sequence from the MUS 255 and MUS 256 classes. Prerequisites: MUS 256 or equivalent.

Alternative blues scale choices D. Altered Dominants a. Altered 5’s b. Altered 9’s c. Super-Locrian scales for altered dominants E. Advanced Transcription tools a. Software - The Amazing Slow-Downer 3. Basic instructional plan and methods. The class will feature a large percentage of “hands-on’ time in performance. Focus will be on ear-training, transcription (including self-transcription), writing original jazz lines relating to advanced chord progressions and modes, assigned listening, and memorization and performance of transcribed solos by jazz luminaries.

4. Course requirements (papers, lab work, projects, etc.) and means of evaluation. Students will create files in Band-in-a-Box software and print out lead sheets and practice loops (25%). Two advanced transcriptions will be required both written and memorized (25%). Students will be tested on understanding of altered dominants and appropriate scales (25%). Students will produce well-constructed solos on advanced blues progressions (25%). Performance tests and theory quizzes will evaluate progress.

1. Statement of the major focus and objectives of the course. This course is designed to give students technological and theoretical tools for creating advanced solos in the jazz style.

2. Specify how this new course contributes to the departmental curriculum. Advanced improvisation study supplies the department with a specialized course for the jazz student who is making a commitment to a high level of skill in this area.

This course will be taught with adjunct faculty. The instructor will be a local musician who has experience playing and teaching jazz at the advanced level.

This course will have little impact on existing courses. Advanced study for committed jazz players.
