July 2017 – ML HOW TO USE THIS FORM

In Stage 3 of the Early Field Experiences, teachers are expected to develop basic pedagogical skills and foundational knowledge. Mastery is not expected at this stage. Instead, the teacher candidate should demonstrate sufficient competency to be deemed “ready” to take on full responsibility for classroom instruction, management, assessment, and parental communication.

MENTOR TEACHERS Please keep track of any of the competencies that are addressed throughout the latter part of the term (October– December). We recommend that you look over the form weekly during a brief conference with your intern/student teacher and add notes related to how/when various competencies were met. Either you or the teacher candidate can add notes – or both of you may want to contribute to the completion of the form. The important thing is that, if the teacher candidate is the one keeping track, you have a chance to review the notes and initial that you agree with them.

At the end of the term, you should have a conference meeting with the Field Supervisor and teacher candidate and complete the signature page of the form. The teacher candidate is responsible for submitting the completed (signed) form to Donna Rudman in DIL (at Pitt).

An example of what you might indicate in the form is shown below . . .

TEACHER CANDIDATES It is your responsibility to ensure that you and your Mentor teacher touch base regularly to review the competencies necessary in Stage 3 of early field experiences and to document when and how these competencies were addressed. As noted above, you may write your own notes or you may rely on the Mentor to write notes – it’s important that you and your Mentor decide how you want to keep track of things early on.

After the conference in December (with the Field Supervisor and Mentor), you should provide a signed copy of the form to Donna Rudman for inclusion in your file.

FIELD (UNIVERSITY) SUPERVISORS Please use this form as a way of tracking important learning opportunities for the teacher candidates throughout the fall term (particularly October – December). Each time you visit the classroom, review the form (with the Mentor’s and teacher candidate’s notes). Add your own comments based on what you have been able to observe and document. If necessary, make specific recommendations for opportunities that will enable the teacher candidate to achieve the necessary competencies in a timely fashion. In December, please meet with the Mentor and teacher candidate to review the state 3 early field competencies and sign the completed document. This meeting can be scheduled to coincide with a “regular” field visit.
