Moss and Tallon 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\gm\24992dg12.docx 11 12 Introduced in the House on March 20, 2012 13 Adopted by the House on March 20, 2012 14 15 Summary: Gaffney High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 3/20/2012 House Introduced and adopted ( House Journalpage 45) 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 3/20/2012 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE GAFFNEY HIGH 12 SCHOOL VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, 13 AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING 14 SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING 15 THE 2012 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE. 16 17 Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased 18 to learn that the members of the Gaffney High School varsity boys 19 basketball team of Cherokee County took top honors at the state 20 competition held at the Colonial Life Arena on Friday, March 2, 21 2012; and 22 23 Whereas, to the delight of their fans and the dismay of their 24 opponents, the Gaffney Indians defeated the Lexington Wildcats in 25 a nailbiting overtime finish of 5855 to earn the team’s fifth state 26 title in ten years, making the team the most dominant team of the 27 decade in class AAAA; and 28 29 Whereas, three Indians scored in the double digits: sophomore L. 30 J. Peak with a gamehigh 22 points, Quinshad Davis with 15, and 31 Kerry Williams with 12; and 32 33 Whereas, Cobby McDowell gave the Indians their final and 34 unchallenged lead in overtime with a short jumper from the 35 baseline, and the Indians made 3 of 6 free throws in the last two 36 minutes of the season to seal the team effort; and 37 38 Whereas, as a result of numerous injuries and accumulated fouls, 39 both teams had key players on the bench in overtime, but the 40 Gaffney tribe that had turned out in record numbers to support the 41 team cheered the Indians on to victory; and 42

[5034] 2 1 Whereas, with a 235 record for the season, the Indians successfully 2 recaptured the state title from Lexington, which has fallen to 3 Gaffney for two of the last three years in the final game; and 4 5 Whereas, in a sport that demands speed, strength, and skill, the 6 Gaffney basketball team has endured relentless workouts and 7 demanding practices that enabled the players to “dig deep” in the 8 final minutes of their championship game; and 9 10 Whereas, for the last fifteen years, Head Coach Mark Huff and his 11 skilled coaching staff have used their own athletic ability and 12 training to forge championship teams and teach these athletes 13 lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the 14 court; and 15 16 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 17 Representatives are grateful for the pride and recognition that the 18 Gaffney High School basketball players have brought to their 19 school and their community and look to hear of their continued 20 accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore, 21 22 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 23 24 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 25 by this resolution, recognize and honor the Gaffney High School 26 varsity boys basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an 27 outstanding season, and congratulate them for winning the 2012 28 Class AAAA State Championship title. 29 30 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 31 Principal Marlene Davis and Coach Mark Huff. 32 XX 33
