V. Course Description (from HSC Course Catalogue) and Overview http://medicine.tamhsc.edu/elective/ 1. Improve student clinical skills in obtaining a pertinent cardiovascular history and performing physical examination including identification of cardiac murmurs by auscultation. 2. Increase knowledge of path physiology of cardiac illnesses. 3. Improve knowledge about management of cardiac problems, congestive heart failure, angina pectoris acute coronary syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias and emergencies. 4. Improve student skills in identification of EKG abnormalities and arrhythmias. 5. Introduction to non-invasive tests like cardiac stress tests, echocardiograms. 6. Introduction to nuclear cardiology 7. Introduction to hemodynamics, cardiac patients in ICU. 8. Introduction to evidence based approach to medicine practiced in care of cardiac patients.

VI. Course Objectives and Evaluation Method

Objectives: 1. Students will make daily work rounds with the staff cardiologists at St. David’s Medical Center-Round Rock. The student will be encouraged to participate in discussions concerning the patient and his disease. 2. The student will work-up 5-7 patients per week and participate in the care of those patients. At least one patient per week will be in the cardiac ICU. The faculty will conduct teaching during rounds and during consultative times at St. David’s Medical Center-Round Rock. 3. The faculty will conduct didactic lectures on path physiology, clinical features and management of common cardiac problems. 4. The student will participate in the reading of electrocardiograms daily and interpretation of echocardiogram reports and other noninvasive procedures in the office, as well as at St. David’s Medical Center-Round Rock 5. The student will participate in exercise stress testing in the office, as well as at St. David’s Medical Center –Round Rock. 6. If interested the student may accompany the cardiologist and watch cardiac catheterizations and coronary interventions being performed at St. David’s Medical Center-Round Rock. 7. Attend morning report conducted by the staff cardiologist every week at St. David’s Medical Center-Round Rock. 8. Discuss journal articles and major trials with Cardiology attending.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Perform a thorough history and physical examination and plan the initial diagnostic workup for common cardiac problems including angina pectoris and heart failure. 2. Understand the path physiology of major cardiac conditions. 3. Know the therapy for all significant arrhythmias. 4. Understand the role of hemodynamic monitoring of acute myocardial infarction and be familiar with the variations in wedge pressure and cardiac output. 5. Understand the rational therapy of hypertension.

6. Recognize major abnormalities on the electro cardiogram including supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, heart block, ischemia, myocardial infarction and nuclear imaging. 7. Interpret an uncomplicated echocardiogram report, chest x-rays, hemodynamic profiles, and nuclear imaging. 8. Understand the benefits, precautions, and limitations of exercise stress testing. VII. Attendance Policy

TAMHSC – COM student handbook states: Students who miss more than 20% of a 4th year elective for any reason (2 weekdays during a two-week rotation or 4 weekdays for 4 week rotation) will require a remediation plan. However because elective schedules often vary considerably from a standard academic schedule, and students are often requesting extended time off during the interview season, each elective director is encouraged to consider your own attendance and remediation policy

The development and maintenance of a professional attitude is an ongoing responsibility of each student. Professional behavior is expected at all times. All students will be expected to dress in an appropriate manner, convey a professional appearance or image, and are encouraged to be neat and clean. IX. Learning Materials and Activities

 The student will attend outpatient clinic throughout the elective and will be assigned new patients for evaluation as well as previously assigned patients for follow-up.  The student will have set aside time for case presentations and review of key topics.  The student will participate in inpatient cardiac consultations.

c. Professionalism and integrity Statement (Academic Honesty and Plagiarism)

All TAMHSC students are required to comply with the student code of conduct and the academic integrity and honesty standards published in each component’s Student Handbook. Disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the policies of each component. Students found guilty of Academic Dishonesty will receive an “F”/Unsatisfactory in the course. As commonly defined, plagiarism consists of presenting as one's own the ideas, words, writings, etc., which belong to another. In accordance with this definition, you are committing plagiarism if you copy the work of another person and turn it in as your own work, even if you should have the permission of that person. Plagiarism is one of the worst academic violations, for the plagiarist destroys the trust among colleagues without which academic communication cannot be safely conducted.
