ANNUAL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2017 Wollongong Public school is holding its annual athletics carnival at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre, Beaton Park Leisure Centre on Friday, July 21st 2017. At this year’s carnival we will be running the 800 metre event and Discus before the 100 metre races. As such, the children who would like to take part in the these events must nominate themselves on the note below and will need to be at school by 8.15am in order to take the first bus which will depart at 8.20 am. The remaining students will depart school at 9:00am for a carnival start time of 9:30am. Transport to and from the athletics venue will be by bus and all students will be expected to travel this way to cover bus hiring costs. It is suggested that early leavers from school make alternative arrangements on this day as we will not return to school before 2:45pm. Kinder to Year 2 will return to school at 1:45pm. All students will need to bring their own recess and lunch and sufficient drinks for the whole day. The canteen at Beaton Park will not be available to our students and will be out of bounds to them. Parents are requested not to take their children from the care of the teachers to this canteen at any time during the day. The cost for the carnival will be $7 per student. This will cover the cost of the buses and the hire of the athletics track and equipment. Please return the note below with the $7 to the main office by Wednesday, June 28th 2017. Please note no money will be accepted on the day of the carnival. As in past years, we rely very heavily on parents for timekeeping and judging duties on the day. We need at least 12 timekeepers and judges and the more volunteers the shorter the time you will be required. Please indicate below if you are able to help on the day. Your tremendous support in past years has been greatly appreciated by the staff and students. We welcome parents, grandparents and friends to our carnival and we know many of you have to leave work to attend, so a program of events will be attached to the week 9 newsletter to assist you in making these arrangements. This includes wearing full school sports uniform. When representing the school students may be expected to wear representative shirts. • Full school sports uniform includes wearing a school hat and necessary safety equipment for specific sports (i.e. helmet, shin pads, mouth guard etc.) Soft studs are only to be worn while playing rugby league, rugby union, touch, AFL and soccer. They must be removed upon return to school. The same applies to shin pads and other safety gear. • Students are to sign a Player Code of Conduct prior to attending Central Wollongong PSSA sport, district trials and Gala Days (competitive and non-competitive) and any other external sporting event. It is expected that students uphold the Player Code of Conduct at all times, which they must agree to and sign. Parents Code of Behaviour • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours. • Encourage children to participate, do not force them. • Focus on your child’s efforts and performance rather than whether they win or lose. • Encourage children to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence. • Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a competition. • Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performance and skilful plays by all participants. • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. • Respect officials’ decisions and teach children to do likewise. • Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators.
