NES AHP Careers Fellowship Scheme

NES AHP Careers Fellowship Scheme

Application Form: Learning and Development Guide for Falls Prevention

The NES AHP Careers Fellowship Scheme (CFS) supports the learning and development of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) in Scotland. This includes learning that supports service improvement and change in response to national and local priorities, directions and strategies. During 2017/18 the AHP CFS will support learning that contributes to the delivery of the Active and Independent Living Improvement Programme (AILIP) across the whole of Scotland.

What is a NES AHP Careers Fellowship? For the most part the CFS funds learning that AHPs have identified as being important to support their career development to improve service delivery and support better outcomes for people. From time to time we offer an AHP Careers Fellowship where we are seeking an AHP to do a specific piece of education-related work. This normally has a national focus and has been identified as an important contribution to the delivery of strategy/policy ambitions (in this case, Falls Prevention).

What is this NES AHP Careers Fellowship for? We are offering an AHP Careers Fellowship to develop a Learning and Development Guide for Falls Prevention. This is an exciting opportunity for a senior, experienced AHP to work at a national level alongside the Falls Programme and associated network of Community Falls Leads and other key stakeholders. This work aims to support primarily the health and social care work force to adopt a systematic, integrated, co-ordinated and person-centred approach to falls and fracture prevention and management. It is anticipated that the guide will:

 Identify what workforce need to understand and do in relation to falls prevention and management and where to find education to support this  Build on the extensive work already done in falls prevention and management  Be relevant across the health and social care sector and, where appropriate, the wider public sector (e.g. Fire and Rescue services)  Primarily focus on falls prevention with older people (recognising that this may have applicability for other groups)  Focus on falls prevention and management for non-falls’ specialists, including simple case finding (level 1 conversation) and multifactorial risk screening (level 2 screen).

Key outputs: 1. A Learning and Development Guide for Falls Prevention which can be adapted to local context and a range of media formats 2. A plan or model to support local implementation

What’s the anticipated impact? At its heart falls prevention is about supporting people to live active and independent lives, doing the things that matter to them. There are many ways the workforce across health and social care can contribute to this; one of them is to work in partnership with people to prevent falls. To do this the wider workforce need to understand what they need to know about falls prevention and management, to assess what they need to do in relation to falls prevention and management and be supported to do it. This is described further below. Anticipated impact

Engagement: Workforce understand what they need to know about fall prevention Workforce know what they need to do about falls prevention Supervisors, managers and leaders at all levels know what their staff need to know and do about falls prevention

Education: Workforce able to access relevant learning related to falls prevention Workforce acquire, or further develop, skills and practices related to falls prevention

Performance: Workforce are confident and skilled in implementing falls prevention strategies and interventions Workforce are enabled to put skills into practice

Service: Service contributes to supporting older people to remain active and independent in their own home or a community setting

What will I get out of it? The Fellowship is an opportunity to develop your skills and practice related to education and the facilitation of learning. For example, this might include:  Applying and further developing education and facilitation of learning skills and practices  Leading on the development and delivery of an education resource (i.e. the guide) within timeframe and meeting expectations  Extending skills and practices related to stakeholder engagement and partnership working  Developing communication, relationship building and collaboration at a national level  Applying and further extending knowledge and skills related to falls prevention at a national level

As part of this application process you’ll be asked to identify your own learning outcomes. We have a short video that can help you to do this.
