NEWSLETTER Round 6

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

As we approach the Christmas break, we have one match remaining, and all goes well with our teams to date.

At the time of writing, of those 5 teams that are playing in competitive competitions, we have one team in first position, 2 teams in second spot and 1 side running third. And the other team is making great strides in their improvement each week so we can look forward to a climb up the ladder after the next few games.

Hopefully, all of our teams are enjoying their cricket. Judging by the reports from the kids, that I get almost daily in the playground, we will see most of our Club representing Australia in the next couple of years....if not sooner. It’s great to hear and see the enthusiasm of our younger players as they talk me through their wickets or their entire innings (Bradman, eat your heart out. If only you were this good.) It really is encouraging to think that these kids are out there enjoying themselves, whilst participating in good healthy sport.

Don’t forget the Annual Trivia Night on Saturday night March 2 2013, at Heathcote Servos. Get a team table together or if you have other friends who would like to come as well, make up your own tables. All are welcome and it is a great night, where everyone goes home with a prize or gift. There are plenty of games, raffles and auctions to be involved in, so it is one date to mark on your calendar and not to be missed.

Thanks to everybody who has contributed their time to the Pub Raffles, it is very much appreciated. As you all know, we have a large debt to repay and a great set of cricket nets to show for it. These raffles are helping repay that, so it is imperative that we continue to support the Club by taking you turn to spend a couple of hours in a salubrious environment and even have a few quiet ales whilst “ taking one for the Club”. Thanks for your help and your continued support.

Thanks to our sponsors, who weigh in each year so that our kids can train and play with the equipment they require to meet the needs of the game. Please support them where you can, as they are enabling our kids to enjoy the game of cricket as they should.

As this will probably be the last newsletter before the Christmas break, I’ll take this opportunity on behalf of the Committee to wish everybody a very safe, happy and healthy Christmas, and a very prosperous New Year.

And forget what the pundits say, go ahead and indulge yourselves, you all deserve it. Eat drink and be merry and we’ll see you all back on deck in the New Year. Hey kids, be good to Mum and Dad and hopefully Santa brings you some great presents. Merry Christmas.

Yours on a sticky wicket.....Pipes.

PLAYING DRESS

The Club plays in a coloured shirt which commenced 4 seasons ago and these shirts are available for sale at $25.00 ea or by contacting Gary Lockton. The baggy caps have become an expensive item and may be in the vicinity of $45.00 to $50.00

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON all up so we will take orders for them and see how many will be required. Club blue washing hats are available for $20

Whites/creams are mandatory including jumpers or Sloppy Joes. Baseball caps are not approved clothing. Runners must be predominately white. Gary will be available 5-5.30pm at the clubhouse this Sat 10th Nov for purchases. We have a stock of small sizes now available

SPONSORSHIP

A general thank you to all our sponsors for 2011-12 season, as without you we would not be able to meet our cost commitments. Our wholehearted thanks go out to them and may they support us for years to come. So get behind them for the good of our club.

Many years ago sponsorship was unheard of at our club but gradually over the last few years we would never have met the rising costs of running the club without the involvement of sponsors. It is hard for a club such as ours with limited membership and playing numbers to offer our sponsors a great deal for their money. We only ask that you the parents and the heart of our club support our sponsors wherever possible.

A club can’t run effectively without sponsorship and we are no different to any other club. The Sponsor’s dollars go to renewing the kits and equipment that is necessary to give your kids the best opportunity to play and train for cricket. So I offer our Sponsors a sincere thank you for your support and hope you continue with us next season. These Sponsors appear in our newsletter after each match, please support them as their dollars support your kids.

CLUB COMMUNICATIONS

The clubs website is www.boscocricket.org.au . Please make a special of note of this as it has changed since last year and you will need to change your browser search. We keep this site up to date with all club information, contacts and events that all members should be aware of. We welcome your comments and suggestions on what should be contained there and hope we can develop it further as time goes by. A full list of our sponsors can be seen there with relevant links to their websites where supplied and we encourage you to visit these sites. Check out the net photos

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON

There is also the competition website which contains all the club registration details and will provide access to all club members to view results and competition tables and team statistics for both Juniors and Mens competitions. www.cricket-online.info . The coaches and managers and committee have special access to team details and statistics but the general public can access match results. This is used to send emails to families as well so it is important to supply your up to date email contact details.

The Association’s web site is www.ssjca.com.au and provides information on rules, regulations and results. Club details will also be available, as well as full season details. I wholeheartedly recommend the use of this site as it provides everything you need to know about the season. It is essential that you make yourself aware (coaches and managers especially) of the rules of the game and the Administrative regulations. They are all downloadable from the website. The teams, draw and results for the Men’s competition are also located on this website. We are desperately seeking photos to put on the website so if you team events, photos of games and players or even funny general events please send them along with details and we will load up.

CLUB PLAYER STATS

We at St John Bosco cricket club are endeavouring to compile all the records relating to officials, volunteers and player statistics for past years. We have a fairly good data base for years from 1995 onwards but are lacking some information for years prior to that and some player statistics for the years 1995 to 2001. If you have any information hidden away in your cupboard such as old scorebooks or keep in touch with past volunteers please pass on the message. Anyone who finds any errors in the club statistics can they please contact the Secretary.

OLD CRICKET GEAR

We would like to offer you the opportunity to offload your old cricket gear if you are upgrading. We can always use some of it in the younger age group kits and we also have the opportunity to work through a charity to collect and donate any old cricket gear we have. If any families have any unwanted cricket gear that they would care to donate could they please contact a committee person.

HEATHCOTE PUB RAFFLES

We started running raffles last year at the Heathcote pub on Saturday afternoons. We will again be running these this season and they provide much needed funds to pay off the debt we have on the cricket nets. We will be rostering teams to sell a couple of raffles between 4 and 5 on Saturday afternoons so when its your turn come and have a break and a beverage on us.

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING

Australian Mobile Recycling is inviting clubs to collect old mobile phones and will give clubs $3 for each mobile phone collected. I know some people change phones

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON as often as their clothes so I’m sure there are some old phones lying around doing nothing. All mobile phones received will be recycled for reuse. This means they will be refurbished for resale. Each handset is restored to factory conditions and all sim card and memory cards are destroyed. Any phones that are beyond repair will be broken down into their constituent parts and recycled by Australian licensed recyclers. Please give any phones to your coach/manager for handing on to the committee.

MAJOR RAFFLE FOR ALL CRICKET CLUBS

The club has had a policy over many years now not to ask parents to sell raffle tickets as there are enough financial burdens on us during the season. This year we have had some additional costs apart from out nets loan repayments to cover. This raffle is a keep all money we raise job so no need to take a book but if you would like to buy some tickets please contact your coach or committee person. $5 /ticket

Match Reports for Round 6 Juniors

8 Blue match report:

This round was the local derby against Engadine and was played with good spirit and fun by two closely matched teams. The game highlight was a hat trick by Matthew Adam. Matt knocked over the stumps with three wonderful deliveries, good effort Matt keep it up. Each week we can all see the batting, bowling and especially the fielding improving and most importantly everyone is still really enjoying the games and training. The boys and girls have had a great start to their cricket and with only two games left this year have seen some terrific improvement. I would like to take the time to thank Peter Ellsmore for taking on the coaching role and Paul Smithson for looking after the scoring each week, a big thank you to you both.

Cheers Craig

10Ds Match Report – Round 6

St John Bosco 2 for 136 defeated Engadine 6 for 76.

Batting: Luke Mecham 30, Steve 17no, Harrison 15no, Joel 11, Hayden 10no, Talen 10, Luke Morris 9no, Xavier 8no, Lachlan 6no, Matthew 1no, Harry 0, Benjamin 0. Bowling: Benjamin 2/6, Hayden 1/0, Luke Mecham 1/5, Xavier 1/10, Steve 0/0, Harry 0/4, Luke Morris 0/6, Talen 0/8, Harrison 0/8, Matthew 0/11, Joel 0/13)

A great team effort from the mighty Bosco 10D’s. Week 1 saw us establish a strong lead with runs a-plenty from Luke Mecham (leading average across u10’s), Steve, Harrison & Joel in particular, with great support from the remaining players. There was a great moment of excitement and anticipation as young Ben thrilled us as he was on a hat-trick with two bowled in two balls….however good defence from Engadine foiled Ben’s hat-trick plans.

Matt’s bowling was very tidy, and Harry has shown great improvement with tidy bowling figures (keep it up Harry!!). Hayden impressed his grandparents & uncle with an excellent delivery from his first ball in week 2 to knock over the stumps with a beautiful Yorker…Hayden continues to impress with his bowling which is both fast & accurate.

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON

All up, the whole team played great cricket in a good spirit….it’s great to see them improving each week and enjoying the game. Thanks to Stuart, Craig & Marcus (&others) for coaching/managing the boys in week 1, and to George for scoring. Congratulations to Harrison for Player of the Match for his great batting. Well done to all the boys, keep it up ! Matt & Mark

16B Bosco 1* 9(All)/158 (Henry 42, Eoghan 26, Ryan 22, Joe 19, Samuel 12no, Tyler 12) & 6/87 (Benoit 41no, Brandon 15) beat Bangor 123 (Samuel 4/13, Eoghan 4/23, Joe 2/16)

In a tight comp, the boys went to Kareela against the current leaders, with a win needed to gain back top spot. Winning the toss, we went into bat, and lots of players got good starts, resulting in a competitive score to defend. Bowled out early, we went to the field on day 1 for 9 overs, putting in a great display to pickup the top three batsmen before stumps.

Returning in week 2 in the heat, the match got tight, but some excellent bowling got the boys over the line for a 40 run win. It could of been much easier if we had not conceded 30 sundries, which is something to work on for next week. Dismissing Bangor, we went in for some batting practice, highlighted by a great not out innings from Benoit.

Thanks to Luke and Darren Z and Darren N for scoring, and also to Darren Z and Paul D and family for doing our raffles this week.

Mick McCray Manager

MATCH REPORT – UNDER 8 BLACK

This game we played Caringbah at home and unfortunately we just went down. Caringbah had 2 good batting pairs that just made the difference between the two sides. There were some encouraging efforts throughout the game by some of our boys with Mark, Cooper Knowles, Aiden and Brock all batting well and getting amongst the runs. Good to see Brock back after his trip around the world!

Caringbah got off to a good start in the first day of play with their batting it was hard to pull back. Some of our bowlers bowled really well with Will, Brock, Cooper Sullivan, Aiden and Jacko taking wickets. There was a great caught and bowled by Aiden in there also. First of the season. Well done Aiden. Harry chipped in with a couple of good overs.

Players of the match went to Cooper Knowles for his ever improving batting and bowling. Cooper has really come on in recent weeks and always does what is asked of him. Other player of the match went to Jacko with improving bowling, taking his second wicket in recent weeks. Unfortunately we were beaten by a better side. Keep practising boys there is still plenty of improvement there. Well done and good effort

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON

Week 1

Captain Pat won the toss and let us have a bat first. Liam and Dash opened the innings and with some good placement and quick running between the wickets made a solid 18 run partnership with Dash straight driving a scorcher between the bowler and a very relieved umpire for 4. Next in was Jed and Clayton, runs were hard to come by, but the enthusiasm of the boys swinging like axemen at everything was special to see.

Kyan and Kainen came in against some good bowling but played some great defensive play. Kainen told me at change of ends that batting isn’t his specialty, some encouraging words of advice from me and he bludgeoned a cover drive Matt Hayden style for four. I’ll take the credit for that one.

When it was our turn to bowl Jed opened up with the new seed and almost had a wicket with his first ball, Cameron and Rowan bowled some good lines and kept their opening pair honest. When the second pair came in Dash took the bail off with a big inswinger. Pat and Clayton bowled tidy lines and Kyan destroyed the leg stump with a ferocious Yorker, I will have to fix it during the week.

Week 2

With the stumps hastily repaired Rowan opened the bowling for us and softened them up for an onslaught of pace from Liam who took a wicket from a Caribbean style over. When the next pair came in they had to face a barrage of Thommo style bowling from Clayton and Dash who both took wickets. Cameron and Clayton also chimed in with run outs.

The game was on the line when Rowan and Cameron came in to bat, Rowan defended some good bowling and made a few good calls, Cam came out swinging like a rusty gate and smashed several fours, the last over from them was a highlight with some Grahame Wood style running between the wickets somehow it worked and they made 20 between them.

Pat and Liam came in last, Pat showed determination and almost hit a boundary, at the other end Liam was hitting balls everywhere, even with his practice shots, take it easy on me mate. This week’s man of the match was Pat, well done.

Round 7

B3 v Gymea Bay 3 Bosco 1* 9/189 (Matt 74) beat Gymea Bay 3 145 (Chris 4/17, Michael 3/20, Matt 3/52)

The Bosco B3s are back in the winners circle with a solid victory in Round 7. Eleven players took the field (an unusual occurrence for this team) confident of regaining some form after a few bad losses. We won the toss and decided to set a target. Battam confidently volunteered to open the batting. He must have been feeling it that day because he went on to lead the team`s batting attack with 73 runs. Some handy runs were also added by Chapps (27).

The full 40 overs were used to set a target of 189 which we thought would be enough.Lainson broke through early with the ball taking 3 wickets in his first 4 overs. Next up it was Battam and Postill`s turn to take some wickets. Battam took 3 Â and Postill took 4 with an absolutely devastating spell. The fielding was tight and the catches were held. It looked like one of the Gymea batsman might have done it all himself at one stage, but some pressure fielding and solid bowling from Postill put a stop to that rubbish. An important win, well done boys!

B5 v BYE - Umpire B4

B7 v BYE - Umpire B6

Round 8

B3 v Gymea Bay 4 Bosco 1 9(All)/64 lost to Gymea Bay 4* 2/261

It was a game that was never really in our control. The toss was going to be of vital importance due to the heat. Crossy had hoped he could turn around his toss record for the season of no wins and 3 losses. Unfortunately his record continued and we were made to field in the blistering heat. Our fielding was relatively good, but with a few strike bowlers down and the heat getting to the fast bowlers, wickets were few and far between.

Crossy and Jules bowled some tight spin which gave the fast bowlers a rest, but the opposition batting was too sharp and they ended up with a healthy total of 261 after

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2012-13 SEASON the 40 overs. Heat strained and slightly demoralized, we probably didn’t go into bat with the right frame of mind. Bowled out for 64, the only shining light was a solid 15 not out from Boo at the tail. Another loss but some lessons learnt.
