Clover is a picky little bunny. The only thing she will eat is celery soup until she goes to visit her grandma. Clover’s grandma makes surprise soup for her and when she finally tried it, she thought it tasted good. --- Conversation Questions---
(1) Summarize the story we just shared. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Tell why you think Clover is so picky.
(2) Tell the only thing Clover would eat was. (Answer) Celery soup. (Follow Up) Do you remember ever eating celery soup?
(3) Recall how many children mama bunny had. (Answer) Ten. (Follow Up) Tell how many children are in your family.
(4) Guess how much mama bunny would have to cook if all her children were picky like Clover. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Are you a picky eater?
(5) Name who Clover went to visit. (Answer) Grandma. (Follow Up) Tell what kinds of soups grandma made for Clover and herself to eat.
(6) Compare the ingredient grandma used to make her soup to some that you like in your soup. (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Share your favorite soup.
(7) If Clover hadn’t of liked the surprise soup, what do you think she would be eating? (Answer) Any logical answer. (Follow Up) Name one food that you would eat a lot if you could.
(8) List the vegetables that grandma had growing in her garden on page 8. (Answer) Beets, carrots cucumbers, corn, squash, onions, beans, cabbage, and celery. (Follow Up) Name which of these vegetables you would eat.
(9) Recall what secret grandma shared with Clover. (Answer) Her recipe for surprise soup. (Follow Up) Has your grandma ever shared a secret recipe with you?
(10) Tell what you use spices for. (Answer) To season food. To give it flavor. (Follow Up) Do you like food with spices in it? Activities
1. Draw a picture of Clover eating her celery soup. Label everything.
2. Make a list of the vegetables that Grandma had growing in her garden.
3. Make your own recipe for Surprise Soup. List the ingredients.
4. Write Clover on the first line. After that, give a name to each of Clover’s other nine brothers and sisters.
Introductions
1. Have a rabbit on the table. Ask the children what rabbits like to eat. Today we are reading a book about one rabbit that will only eat one thing. –Let’s read and see what it is.
2. Have a can with a fake label on it that says Surprise Soup. Ask the children what they think would be in Surprise Soup. Someone in our story makes it in our story. –Let’s read and find out who it is that makes it and why.
3. Have a list of strange foods or pictures on strange foods. Discuss which foods you would eat and ask the children which foods they would eat. In our book, a little rabbit is a very picky eater. –Let’s see if Grandma can change how she eats.
