Lesson Title: Cross Contour Drawing Teacher: Jessica Runge Grade Level: 5th grade # of Sessions: 3- 40 minute sessions GPS: VA5MC.1 Engages in the creative process to generate and visualize ideas. a. Creates a series of thumbnail sketches to alter visual images (e.g., magnifying, reducing, repeating or combining them in a variety of ways) to change how they are perceived and interpreted. VA5PR.1 Creates artworks based on personal experience and selected themes. e. Creates representational art works from direct observation (e.g., landscape, still life, portrait.) VA5PR.2 Understands and applies media, techniques, and processes of two-dimensional art processes (drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed-media) using tools and materials in a safe and appropriate manner to develop skills. d. Creates drawings using a variety of techniques (e.g., linear perspective, contour line, gesture line).

Essential Questions: -How do my techniques and choices affect my work? -How do I show craftsmanship in my work?

Student Objectives: - Students ill make several thumbnail sketches. - Students will use direct observation to create their cross contour drawing and still life. - Students will create a 2 dimensional drawing - Students will use tools and materials safely and appropriately - Students will use the cross contour method of drawing to create artwork. Lesson Focus: - Line - Cross Contour Drawing Technique Development: - Direct observation - Comparison of Cross contour drawing to contour drawing

Summary of Activity/Mediums: Students will use paper and pencils to draw stuffed animals from observation using the contour and cross contour methods of drawing. They will trace both with sharpie and label each kind of drawing. They will also draw the Venn diagram comparing the 2 types on the back of their paper in pencil. Materials: Teacher Prep. - 18x 24 Newprint (sketching) - 12x18 Manila paper - Pencils - Erasers - Sharpies - Stuffed animals Vocabulary: -line- the distance between two points made by a moving point with a drawing tool. -blind contour drawing- a observational drawing created without looking at your paper and drawing the contour of the object. -direct observation-translating what you see when looking at a three-dimensional object into lines and shapes on a flat piece of paper. -proportion- the relation of one portion to another in size. -Contour drawing- drawing the outline or outside edges of shapes or objects. -Cross contour drawing- drawing the outline or outside edges of shapes or objects and adding drawn lines which travel across the form.

Teaching Procedures: - Building Activity: Discuss contour drawing and cross contour drawing methods. Demonstrate how they are created using the same materials as the students. Review demo and discuss how they will be creating them as a class. Students will make several thumbnail sketches using newsprint, pencils, and stuffed animals to help them practice cross contour drawing - Instruction/Steps: 1. Use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast contour drawing with Cross Contour drawing. 2. Review process of creating a contour and cross contour drawing 3. Have students draw Venn diagram on back of paper and then begin creating their drawing. 4. Fold paper in half and have students draw and label a contour drawing of a stuffed animal on the left side of paper. 5. Have students draw and label a cross contour drawing of the same stuffed animal on the right side of the paper.

-Closure: Review Venn diagram and display work.
