MINUTES OF THE ADIRONDACK FORTY-SIXERS BUSINESS MEETING FALL 2016 Saturday, October 1, 2016 Keene Central School, Keene Valley, New York

CALL TO ORDER AND INTRODUCTIONS

Brian Hoody called the meeting to order. Brian welcomed all participants, and acknowledged past presidents in attendance: Nancy Allen, Barb Harris, Mary Lou Recor, Jim Barnshaw, Jim Bailey, Phil Corell, and George Sloan. Brian acknowledged the earliest-numbered climbers here this evening, Clark Gittinger #103 and Wynne Cotton #460.

TREASURER’S REPORT (Phil Corell)

We received slightly more in contributions ($47,000) than we did in dues ($45,000) this year. The extra revenue lets us have influence as stewards of the summits.

$69,500 was donated to worthy causes, including $31,000 to the ADK Pro Crew for the preseason trail sweep and rehabilitation on Mount Colden. Phil corrected an Adirondack Daily Enterprise story which credited the ADK with this grant instead of the 46ers. Other donations were made to the Summit Steward Program ($15,000) and the WCS Bear Steward Program ($5,100).

We also sponsored two students to attend DEC Summer Camp, contributed $3,700 to Lean2Rescue, subsidized a number of 46ers who gained Wilderness First Aid certification, and donated $7,300 to local fire departments and mountain rescue units.

Next year we are planning to make a major grant of $46,000 to the ADK, consisting of $31,000 to support the Pro Crew ($6,000 for the trail sweep and $25,000 for Mount Colden trail rehabilitation Phase 3) and $15,000 to support the Summit Steward Program.

Phil announced "sad news" - that the annual dues has been increased to $10 (to a disappointed but sympathetic a-w-w-w- from the audience) to have a bit more available for education and conservation activities. Phil explained that a caterer had to supply this evening's meal on short notice and asked for an evaluation (loud applause). Phil indicated any comments on the meal or the meeting arrangements are welcome, by E-Mail.

FOUNDERS AWARD PATCH PRESENTATIONS

Mike McLean and Curt Snyder presented Founders Awards, in recognition of service to the 46ers over three years or more, to the following: Chris Sekellick #5566; Nancy Buckley #5611; Bob Cieciereja #5814W; and Gail Sanders #5356. Awards earned this year but not presented because the recipients couldn't be here tonight included Dean Giuliano #4963W; Marta Bolton #2971W; and George Miller #5389.

OFFICE OF THE HISTORIAN (Siobhan Carney-Nesbitt)

There are a lot of climbers. 324 are now registered for the class of 2016, compared with 264 at this time last year. Many others are in progress.

Continuous assignment of climbing numbers is working well; it leads to much less work at the end of the year.

Siobhan thanked Sally Hoy who helps by producing certificates; Hank Sondheimer who helps with photos; Joe Murphy who helps with ongoing assignment of climbing numbers; and Dan Kane who helps with sending out letters to finishers. These people are enabling us to keep up with a very large number of finishers.

PEEKS (Chuck Schwerin)

Chuck's fourth issue of Peeks is almost ready. He reminded the audience that the magazine can by only as good as the material submitted.

Chuck said you never know from where inspiration will come. For example Chuck resolved after hearing an interview with the late Helen Menz #42 to capture and document her story. He is glad that happened.

Chuck joked darkly that there is no room for anyone to die (as a way of stating that there's very little room for obituaries in Peeks).

OUTDOOR SKILLS WORKSHOP (Bill Lundy) The OSW is continuing to deliver its message of conservation. The 2017 edition will take place the first week of May.

If you've experience with education - military or civilian - you'll be welcome to take part in the workshop as an instructor.

TRAILMASTERS (Pete Hickey, San Eddy, and Tom Fine)
