Job Title: English Language Learner (ELL/ESL) Tutor Location: SATEC Job Group: Non-Certified, Non-Union Reports To: Franklin County Migrant Education Consortium Coordinator

Summary: Tutor and assist out of school youth (age 14-22) to help them learn English and related concepts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Meets with assigned student(s) to assess the level of English competency.

2. Prepares lesson plans, course materials and handouts appropriate for young adult learners.

3. Presents subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using discussions, written materials, and/or small group interaction in home-based settings.

4. Observes student’s performance and records relevant data to assess progress.

5. Meets with ELL/ESL/VAL teachers to discuss assigned duties and to coordinate instructional efforts. Obtains appropriate materials and supplies such as textbooks.

6. Maintains a regular tutoring schedule and meets in a timely manner.

7. Collaborates with Migrant Education Program Office Staff to ensure appropriate services are provided. Any and all concerns must be relayed to the program coordinator immediately.

8. Maintains files that are accurate, clear and concise.

9. Attend regional and team statewide meetings.

10. May provide other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: A Bachelor’s degree. Bachelor’s degree in education preferred. ESL certification/experience necessary. Must speak Spanish. Some experience or training working with young adults is helpful. Language Skills: The position requires basic knowledge of Spanish and a willingness to learn/improve Spanish-speaking skills. The ability to read and interpret textbooks and documents such lesson plans and manuals is essential. Ability to develop and write routine correspondence using correct English usage, spelling and grammar is needed. Ability to speak clearly and effectively with parents, staff and students is required.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply basic concepts of math. Calculates figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, and volume.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Technology Skills: An average ability to learn and utilize new software programs as systems are upgraded is preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to maintain confidentiality of information presented in various forms (written/oral) and the ability to demonstrate an understanding, patient, fair and receptive attitude is required. Occasionally performs a variety of clerical skills. Some knowledge of behavioral characteristics, growth and development is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to traveling to sites within Franklin County. At times, the incumbent is required to sit; walk and stand. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to speak and to hear engaging in conversations in quiet environment. Occasional manual dexterity is required for writing, filing, keyboarding.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly travels to homes and other worksites. Work is primarily conducted inside. The employee must be able to follow directions, routines, meet deadlines with some time constraints. The ability to willingly collaborate and contribute positively to maintain a productive and efficient work/learning environment is essential. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
