Is It Food Poisoning, Flu Or NOROVIRUS

Is it Food Poisoning, Flu or NOROVIRUS???

Outbreaks of Norovirus have been reported in college settings across the USA. Students may incorrectly diagnose themselves as having “eaten something” that caused the upset and not be aware of their contagious condition. Norovirus prevention requires good hand washing technique, using SOAP. Hand sanitizers and wipes will not kill the virus. If you are experiencing these symptoms, please call the Health Service to discuss your condition, prior to walking in: (607)871-2400, M – F, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 Norovirus is a viral gastroenteritis and is not related to influenza (the real flu).  Symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea.  Millions of viruses are in poop, vomit, and possibly nasal secretions of a sick person.  Illness is spread when a few of these viruses get into someone else's mouth.  A person is contagious (still producing viruses) for at least 3 days after symptoms have stopped.  The viruses can live for weeks on surfaces.  Clean with chlorine bleach or Lysol® disinfectant spray. Clorox® wipes and Lysol® wipes DO NOT kill these viruses.  Stay away from other people as much as possible while you are contagious.  Most importantly, wash your hands WITH SOAP frequently!  Hydrate during illness with clear liquids and/or electrolyte replacement fluids to avoid more serious symptoms
