Humanity Association for Orphans – HAFO – The Gambia 8 ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND HAFO is an indigenous community based organization that was established in order to salvage the deplorable rate of certain members of our societies that we consider as less privileged. These set of people are not considered during decision making within their family cycle, in their community and the country at large. They do not normally socialized, interact and always isolate themselves as they have seen themselves as inferior even among their peer groups. In most cases they have no proper family care and usually have less facilities of going to school and cannot even provide for their sustenance.

It is based on this background that a cross section of the present executive sat and thought of ways to salvage the deplorable conditions of such people who deserved to be heard, listened to and interact with everyone they wish to, and come up with this initiative and hence formed this organization.

Humanity Association for Orphans – HAFO – The Gambia 9 PEOJECT DESCTIPTION OR DETAILS This project was established on the bases of humanitarian from past experience in the schools in which we reach as well as being counselors. We were able to find out that, there are lots of students in senior secondary schools who are unable to pay their school fees, just because they have lost their parent(s) who are their main sponsors. Because of this they decide to leave school and live a hopeless life. We also realized that most of theses orphans do not have direct family who are willing to take good care of them. They instead depend on friends for their livelihood.

It is on this background that we started to pay school fees for some students in our respective school out of our meager salaries, especially for those vulnerable cases that we were able to identify. We did that exercise for about two years, and we therefore decided to set up an organization to see into the affairs of such students, not only in our schools in which we teach, but to other schools as well. This organization was therefore named HAFO which was officially set up in 2008 and finally registered in 2009. To provide schooling facilities for less privileged students as well as drop out from school by providing basic skills and medication for the sickly who cannot afford to pay for their medical bills in hospitals and health care centres.

Humanity Association for Orphans – HAFO – The Gambia 10 PROBLEM STATEMENT ANALYSIS Considering the level of our earnings as members, the sustenance of such venture was highly doubtful. We may find it difficult to continue paying school fees for student, especially so when the number of vulnerable students begins to increase. The cost of Senior Secondary School education is not easy task and therefore needed reasonable source of funds.

We also considered the fact that, these vulnerable students are not only in the schools we teach, but could be found in other schools as well. In order to identify these less privilege students in other schools apart from the schools we teach was a difficult task and therefore needed a concerted effort, the hands of three or four people is not enough to cover the targeted areas.

Another very acute problem we are facing is in the provision of medical support to the sickly persons who are in critical ill condition at hospitals and health centres. We also need to provide them with basic medical support as well as other skills that will help others to be self reliance

In order to combat these problems, there is need to set up a formidable organization that composed of dedicated individuals, that are ready to render their services to such people in order to develop our beloved nation as the saying goes “many heads are better than a few”

Humanity Association for Orphans – HAFO – The Gambia 11 GOALS The main goal of this organization is to provide educational facilities to those that cannot afford it, as well as improving their skills in other fields in order to make them self reliance.

Secondly, to provide medical support to the sickly persons who are at critical conditions in hospitals and health centres who cannot afford to pay their medical bills.
