All Scouts will have the opportunity to earn two Merit Badges/Awards during the Jamboree. This year’s offered Merit Badges are listed below and may require additional work to be completed before or after the Jamboree. Any pre-requisite work must be completed before the Jamboree begins.
Alternate classes are offered for both youth Scouts, and adult Scouters. The Alternative Classes may take the place for either the morning or afternoon class session. If a Scout participates in an Alternative Classes, they will not be able to use that time to be in a Merit Badge Class, and will therefore only earn one Merit Badge. The classes for adult Scouters are available to any adult regardless of their position in the troop and are recommended for those adults who would like to be engaged in a class instead of waiting around with an excess of free time. By no means are any of the adult Scouter Classes mandatory, but are just another opportunity for the adults which support the troops.
Pre-Requisites:
Merit Badge Pre-Requisite 3.Do ONE of the following: a. Build and fly a fuel-driven or battery powered electric model airplane. Describe safety rules for building and flying model airplanes Tell safety rules for use of glue, paint, dope, plastics, fuel, and battery pack. b. Build a model FPG-9. Get others in your troop or patrol to make their own model, then organize a competition to test the precision Aviation of flight and landing of the models.
4a. Cut a round onion into small chunks. Separate the onion chunks into three equal portions. Leave the first portion raw. Cook the second portion of onion chunks until the pieces are translucent. Cook the third portion until the onions are caramelized, or brown in color. Taste each type of onion. Describe the taste of raw onion versus partially cooked onion versus caramelized onion. Explain what Chemistry happens to molecules in the onion during the cooking process. Digital Technology none 2. Complete an electrical home safety inspection of your home, using the checklist found in this pamphlet or one approved by your Electricity counselor. Discuss what you find with your counselor. Electronics none 1. Do the following: a. Find an article on the use or conservation of energy. Discuss with your counselor what in the article was interesting to you, the Energy questions it raises, and what ideas it addresses that you do not understand.Conduct an energy audit of your home. 4. Conduct an energy audit of your home. Keep a 14 day log that records what you and your family did to reduce energy use. Include the following in your report and, after the 14 day period, discuss what you have learned with your counselor. a. List the types of energy used in your home such as electricity, wood, oil, liquid petroleum, and natural gas, and tell how each is delivered and measured, and the current cost; OR record the transportation fuel used, miles driven, miles per gallon, and trips using your family car or another vehicle. b. Describe ways you and your family can use energy resources more wisely. In preparing your discussion, consider the energy required for the things you do and use on a daily basis (cooking, showering, using lights, driving, watching TV, using the computer). Explain how you can change your energy use through reuse and recycling. 2 Engineering none 7. a. Visit a physician's office,** preferably one who delivers "primary care." (This may be that of your counselor.) Discuss the components of a medical history and physical examination (an official BSA health form may be used to guide this discussion), and become familiar with the instruments used. b. Describe the characteristics of a good diagnostic test to screen for disease (e.g. routine blood pressure measurement). Explain briefly why diagnostic tests are not perfect. Medicine c. Show how to take a blood pressure reading and a pulse reading. 10. 1 Serve as a volunteer at a health-related event or facility in your community (e.g. blood drive, "health fair", blood pressure screening, etc.) approved by your counselor. 4. Do ONE of the following; then discuss with your counselor the different kinds of radiation and how they can be used: a. Build an electroscope. Show how it works. Place a radiation source inside and explain the effect it causes. b. Make a cloud chamber. Show how it can be used to see the tracks caused by radiation. Explain what is happening. c. Obtain a sample of irradiated and non-irradiated foods. Prepare the two foods and compare their taste and texture. Store the leftovers in separate containers and under the same conditions. For a period of 14 days, observe their 149 rate of decomposition or Nuclear Sciences spoilage, and describe the differences you see on days 5, 10, and 14. 8. Do ONE of the following: a. Write a 500-word report on a book about oceanography approved by your counselor. b. Visit one of the following: 1. Oceanographic research ship 2. Oceanographic institute, marine laboratory, or marine aquarium Write a 500-word report about your visit. c. Explain to your troop in a five minute prepared speech "Why Oceanography Is Important" or describe "Career Opportunities in Oceanography Oceanography." (Before making your speech, show your speech outline to your counselor for approval.) Programming none Radio none Robotics none
Search and 4. Find out who in your area has authority for search and rescue and what their responsibilities are. Discuss this with your counselor, Rescue and explain the official duties of a search and rescue team. Space Exploration none 9. Do ONE of the following: a. Make one of the following instruments: wind vane, anemometer, rain gauge, hygrometer. Keep a daily weather log for one week using information from this instrument as well as from other sources such as local radio and television stations, NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, and Internet sources (with your parent's permission). Record the following information at the same time every day: wind direction and speed, temperature, precipitation, and types of clouds. Be sure to make a note of any morning dew or frost. In the log, also list the weather forecasts from radio or television at the same time each day and show how the weather really turned out. b. Visit a National Weather Service office or talk with a local radio or television weathercaster, private meteorologist, local agricultural extension service officer, or university meteorology instructor. Find out what type of weather is most dangerous or Weather damaging to your community. Determine how severe weather and flood warnings reach the homes in your community.
Special Programs This module is designed to help you explore how science affects your life each day. 1. Choose A or B or C and complete ALL the requirements. A. Watch about three hours total of science-related shows or documentaries that involve projectiles, aviation, weather, astronomy, or space technology. Then do the following: 1. Make a list of at least five questions or ideas from the show(s) you watched. 2. Discuss two of the questions or ideas with your counselor B. Read (about three hours total) about projectiles, aviation, space, weather, astronomy, or aviation or space technology. Then do the following: 1. Make a list of at least two questions or ideas from each article. 2. Discuss two of the questions or ideas with your counselor. C. Do a combination of reading and watching (about three hours total). Then do the following: NOVA Shoot! 1. Make a list of at least two questions or ideas from each article or show. 2.Complete ONE merit badge from the following list. (Choose one that you have not already used toward another Nova award.) After completion, discuss with your counselor how the merit badge you earned uses science. Archery, Astronomy, Athletics, Aviation, Rifle Shooting, Robotics, Shotgun Shooting, Space Exploration, Weather Military Skills Bring a warm sweatshirt or jacket to wear over Class-A uniform for military tactics section. 3 Transportation:
There is no visitor parking on the Naval Academy grounds and very limited parking in Downtown Annapolis, so all Scouts and Scouters should arrive at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium where buses will be provided to transport all participants to the Naval Academy Campus. Additionally, no Scouters will be able to drive on the yard.
