Student Groups for Whom Goals Have Been Set

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The discussion of equity and closing achievement gaps has been an ongoing topic of conversation at Chaffey College. It has been such a priority that it is prominently listed as one of the college’s Institutional Goals. There is an ongoing dialog about being better at serving all of our students. The idea of open access and student success are consistent themes throughout the college.

Chaffey College has worked diligently over the years to provide resources to students who are traditionally considered underserved or underrepresented. As it relates to the college mission statement, the population in the college’s service area is documented as experiencing: 1) high unemployment, and 2) low college attendance rates. In support of the community college mission, Chaffey College’s Student Equity Plan (SEP) is designed to ensure equitable access to and success in higher education. The 2015-2016 Chaffey College SEP is congruent with ongoing college-wide conversations and initiatives about addressing and closing achievement gaps.

Student groups for whom goals have been set There is much work to do in the equity plan to reduce disproportionate impact and close the achievement gap. In the Chaffey College 2015-2016 Student Equity Plan the following students groups represent those for which goals have been set

Target Group Equity Indicator, Goals & Activities African Americans Course Completion, Basic Skills Completion, Degree and Certificate Completion Asians and Pacific Islanders Course Completion Caucasians Access, Foster Youth Access, Course Completion, Degree and Certificate Completion, Transfer Hispanic/Latino Basic Skills Completion, Transfer

Males Access, Basic Skills Completion, Degree Completion Students with Disabilities Basic Skills Completion, Students by age group Access, Basic Skills Completion, Degree and Certificate Completion, Transfer

While veterans have not been identified as experiencing disproportionate impact on any of the Student Equity Indicators in 2015, the college continues to place emphasis on the SB860 requirements to support current and former foster youth and veterans through all of the indicators and activities. Goals are for each student group, for the success indicators describe in this plan. The overall goal of this equity plan is to close the achievement gap and eliminate disproportionate impact for all student groups, specifically the target groups named above. It is also a goal of the college to continue to have equity as a priority for all constituent groups across the college, ultimately leading to equity mindedness and conversations as part of the college culture. All activity-specific goals are designed to bring the student target groups within range of all peer groups.

Actions that the college or district will undertake to achieve these goals The college has planned a variety of activities, which are described throughout the plan, to achieve its goals. Activities include: course transformation; professional development and training for faculty, managers, and classified employees; and direct student engagement and support with a focus on personal enrichment and development. The college has institutionalization supplemental instruction and is increasing accelerated class offerings, two practices which research indicates significantly improve success rates among the target populations. The college has also engaged in extensive campus-wide equity conversations. The collection of information and ideas resulting from campus feedback were reviewed by President’s Equity Council subgroups who identified potential goals, resources and activities.

Student equity funding and other resources that have been budgeted for that purpose Resources from the Student Equity funds have been budgeted to maximize resources against resources from the college’s general fund, Student Success and Support Program, Basic Skills Initiative, Adult Education Block Grant and federal grant resources. Details of the spending and budget can be found in the Summary Budget section of this plan.
