The Auburn High School chapter of National Honor Society adopted the constitution for the local chapter on May 21, 1992.
Dues are to be paid by October 1 each year. If dues are not paid by this date, students will not be allowed to participate in any NHS activities until the dues are paid.
1. Dues are not to exceed $5 per year, and membership should not be denied because of a student’s inability to pay.
2. Regular NHS meetings shall be held the first Wednesday of every month.
3. Additional meetings shall be called as needed.
4. The following officers will be selected each year: President Treasurer Vice-president Reporter Secretary Student council representative
5. Members should fully understand that they are to maintain the standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character for which they were selected. Failure to do so will result in suspension from NHS, and possibly permanent expulsion.
Please review the following items concerning NHS members’ conduct.
Meetings If a member misses two meetings, a warning will be issued. If a member misses a third meeting, the case will go before the Faculty Advisory Council for a ruling of suspension or dismissal.
Service The personal volunteer service requirement is eight hours per semester, for which the member does not receive money or other payment, and is not performed for a family member. The eight hours will be comprised of both NHS school activities and outside volunteer activities, consisting of at least three different activities in total each semester, at least two of which must be in non-school related activities. (Amended in May 2004) An activity is “in-school” if: it is sponsored by an AHS teacher or AHS organization. it is performed during the school day.
If the volunteer service is not completed, the student will go on probation, which will be reviewed by the Faculty Advisory Council, with the possibility of suspension or dismissal. Seniors who have not completed their volunteer work will not receive the NHS cord and tassel for graduation.
All new inductees are required to attend meetings for the remainder of the school year, and are required to complete three service hours by May 14, 2010. The service hours must be pre- approved. School Violations The Constitution of the National Honor Society Handbook will serve as the guideline for defining the principles that Auburn NHS students will follow. In addition, any student found to have seriously and/or flagrantly violated school policy/regulations may be suspended from the Auburn Chapter of the National Honor Society for up to 90 days and, if drugs or alcohol are involved, may be enrolled in an approved drug/alcohol program. During this period of time, the student shall not be allowed to participate in any National Honor Society activities. The decision to suspend or not to suspend under this policy shall be the decision of the Faculty Advisory Council. After the suspension period, the student shall have a period of ten (10) school days in which to petition the advisory council for reinstatement. Such petition shall be presented to the Chapter Advisor, who will schedule a hearing before the council. The council decision could be for continued suspension, dismissal, or reinstatement. If a student does not petition for reinstatement during the ten (10) day period following the suspension, that student will automatically be dropped from the membership rolls of the Auburn Chapter of the National Honor Society. In addition, a student who holds an officer’s position in the NHS may be dismissed from that position for violation of school rules, pending the Advisory Council vote.
Seniors involved in suspension from NHS, whose suspensions would expire during the next school year, will automatically be reinstated to the membership rolls after graduation unless the Advisory Council directs another definite course of action. Dismissals shall remain permanent.
A documented case of cheating results in suspension. Suspension from school results in dismissal. A second offense by a National Honor Society member of substance abuse or any other school policy shall result in a dismissal from NHS.
Please avoid even the appearance of misconduct! Remember, you are role models for the students in this school! Don’t do anything that you would not want your parents to read about on the front page of the newspaper!
Grades All members must maintain a 3.5 GPA each semester to remain in good standing. If a 3.5 GPA is not met, the student will be placed on probation and he/she will have the next semester to achieve a 3.5 GPA for that semester. If the student’s grade point average still is below a 3.5 for the second consecutive semester, he/she will be dismissed from National Honor Society. A student dismissed for grade point average may re-apply during the regular spring application period if the overall GPA is once again a 3.5 average.
The faculty council will decide the consequences of other violations on a case-by-case basis.
The Advisory Council shall consist of five faculty members appointed annually by the principal. Members may be appointed to consecutive terms. The Chapter Advisors and Assistant Advisors shall be non-voting members of the Advisory Council.
