….students will participate in art shows/competitions and class critiques. They will receive a calendar of upcoming events periodically to plan their project schedules and propose project ideas based on their interests and in relation to our studies. Students will keep a journal of drawing and writing to be graded weekly as homework. They will also develop a portfolio of class work that will be assessed every nine weeks as a test grade. Students will create presentations on artists for their Art History component and may also be involved in special projects around the school and community, such as window painting or mural painting.
Studio Policy
Art is both academic and vocational. Because it is a studio class, students are expected to behave as professional, working artists each day. In addition to following school policies, I expect students to: work quietly all period, care for tools, supplies and materials, and clean up their own areas thoroughly. Work ethic and personal responsibility are as important as mastering content. PLEASE NOTE: Nothing is allowed on the desk surface except for art materials during class. Space is provided to store belongings safely in the classroom. These are not permitted:
Food, drink, candy or electronic devices
Unprofessional language, including profanity, obscenity or bullying
Images considered inappropriate by community standards. Art work will adhere to school appropriate content and may be censored at the discretion of the instructor.
Inappropriate attire. Dress code must be followed as described in the handbook. Grading
Grades are weighted by category, with projects having the largest percentage as they take the majority of class time. Projects will be assessed according to criteria that are given in the instructions and they must be worked on in class. Unfinished work will not be graded. Students must meet project deadlines for shows and critiques.
. Homework is a key part of artistic growth and must be done consistently for the greatest benefit. Homework will be given partial credit if not complete on the critique date. Make every effort to stay on or ahead of schedule.
Homework 10%
Class work 20%
Presentations 10% 9 weeks test 10%
Projects 50% Supply list for Art 5 Supplies due on ______
Bring this checklist and all of your supplies by the due date for a quiz grade of 100 points. Each item on the list is worth points – you must have all 7 for full credit. Each day late will deduct 10 points from your grade. All students must have their own supplies to continue in class. All other materials will be supplied by the instructor.
Please bring one of each:
o Sketchbook that is spiral bound or hard cover and has at least 80 sheets of white paper (not newsprint). Size: at least 11” x 14”. It can be larger if desired, students have drawers for storage. Write your name on the front of your sketchbook with permanent marker. 20 points
o Two stretched canvases, your choice of size. Write your name on the back. 20 points
o Container for art supplies. 15 points
o Set of acrylic paints, see below. 15 points*
o Set of colored pencils, see below. 15 points**
o Set of Sharpie permanent markers. 15 points
o Bottle of hand sanitizer – Extra credit 10 points
Optional: felt tip markers or pens if you like to use them for drawing.
At this level, I am assuming that students have a set of graphite drawing pencils, a sharpener, blending sticks and a white vinyl eraser. If they are missing any of these items, I will supply them. If it is a hardship to get any of the above materials, an extension may be given. My intention is to equip students for competition and to prepare them for college art classes. Good quality materials will facilitate excellent art work.
The sketchbook will serve as a notebook for the class. You will use it nearly every day and must have it with you. I would prefer the spiral binding on the top of the book if possible. You may take it home to complete homework assignments but you must remember to bring it back daily.
Sharpies will be used to decorate various surfaces; get whatever assortment you prefer. Where to buy these supplies: Walmart carries many of these items. Art supplies are found in aisle I-25. Michaels offers the Artists Loft brand of economical art materials. They often have sales of 40% off sketchbooks, and you can get coupons online. A.C. Moore also has a complete selection of art supplies and offers coupons online.
*I would prefer Liquitex Acrylic tubes; these are expensive…but they will last all year! Colors needed: Mars Black, Titanium White, Cadmium Red Medium, Ultramarine Blue, and Cadmium Yellow Light.
**Crayola, Derwent, Prang and Artists Loft are good choices of colored pencils, avoid the brands Rose Art and CraZart.
