Instructions for Completing Individualised Learner Record – Part 3 Family Learning Bulls Eye This form is to be used in addition to ILR Part 1 and 2 for all Family Learning single sessions of 3-5 hours (excluding taster sessions) for initial assessment and recording progression.

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) states that:

Initial assessment is the tool that enables us to identify the approximate level at which a learner is working. In order to know how learners have progressed we need to know from what level they started. We also need to record the level they feel they reached at the end of a course.

The A4 size is to be used individually by learners attending the course (starting from September 2005). The flipchart size is to be used for group assessment (this is at the pilot stage).

Guidelines for Use by Tutors  Fill in on the boxes/labels the topics (ie learning outcomes) you will cover in your session (please note you don’t have to fill in all the topics).  For individual assessment ask learners to complete the dartboard (A4 size) for each family group.  For group assessment ask the group to complete the dartboard (flipchart size). Presented on a flipchart, board etc giving easy access for the learners.  Ask the learners, in family groups, as they finish their ILRs, to complete the dartboard by placing their name(s) in each section for each topic to show their learning, starting point for that topic. Remember, the nearer the bull’s eye, the more knowledge they have about that topic.  At the end of the session, ask them to return to the dartboard, look at where they felt they were at the beginning of the session and ask them to draw an arrow towards the bull’s eye to show how far they feel they have progressed. Hopefully they will have moved nearer to the centre, but this is not always the case. You could use the assessment of the journey shown on the bull's eye as a way of recapping and closing the session.  Keep the dartboard(s) in your course file.
