Application for 2016-17 Miami University Journalism Program Scholarships Deadline: 5 p.m. EST, Friday, April 8, 2016 Miami University students are invited to apply for Journalism Program scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year. Available funds and their requirements are listed on pages 2-3 of this form. To apply, students must complete this form and where applicable submit supporting materials. Applications are due in electronic form by 5 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2016, to Joe Sampson at [email protected].

Please check the awards for which you would like to be considered and submit via single PDF document additional required materials as outlined in individual scholarship descriptions. Applicants for all awards except the Michael Kelly Prize must be returning students. Students who meet most but not all of the requirements for a particular award are still encouraged to apply. The Journalism Scholarship Committee will consider both the specifications and the spirit of awards in selecting recipients.

Timothy J. Rogers Scholarship . Available to students who are active in one or more Miami student-run media. . 2016-17 award: One $2000 scholarship. . Application requirements: Essay should outline growth as a journalist and lessons learned through frequent publication or airing of work; GPA of 3.5 in major and 3.2 overall; three to five samples of best journalistic work (reporting, writing, editing, design and/or photography, videography).

Emily J. Cordes Memorial Scholarship . Available to journalism students who demonstrate exemplary academic merit . 2016-17 award: One $2000 scholarship. . Application requirements: None.

Lawlor-Galeese Scholarship . Available to journalism students with full time residency in Ohio who demonstrate interest and skill in print journalism. . 2016-17 award:One $2000 scholarship . Application requirements: Must be a full time Ohio resident. Three to five samples of best journalistic work in print platform.

Richard L. Spears Scholarship . Available to journalism students specializing in broadcast news who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. In addition, awardees will be selected based on evidence of university, school or community involvement . 2016-17 award: One $3000 scholarship. . Application requirements: three samples of best broadcast journalism work (radio/audio or TV/video platforms). 250- word essay outlining evidence of university, school or community engagement/involvement.

Memorial Tournament Journalism Scholarship . Available to 2016-17 senior studying print or broadcast journalism. . 2016-17 award: One $2000 scholarship. . Application requirements: Essay should outline growth as a journalist and lessons learned through frequent publication or airing of work; GPA of at least 3.5 in major and at least 3.2 overall; three to five samples of best journalism work (reporting, writing, editing, design and/or photography); finalists interview with Memorial Tournament representative. This award is available only to students with senior standing for 2016-17.

Reid-Heckler-Gambrell Award . Available to journalism students who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. Preference given to students interning in developing nations or on post-war/fledgling democracies. . 2016-17 awards: Two $1000 scholarships. . Application requirements: Essay should highlight interest and involvement in foreign affairs reporting; application should also include proof of overseas journalism internship. John Lowery Scholarship . Available to journalism students who demonstrate interest and skill in journalistic writing. . 2016-17 award: One $1000 scholarship. . Application requirements: three to five samples of published journalism work.

Michael Kelly Prize . Available to a journalism student or students (including graduating seniors) who exhibit exemplary professionalism and ethical decision-making in journalism. . 2016 award: One $500 award. . Application requirements: Essay highlighting dedication to professionalism and/or sound ethics in journalism, offering plentiful examples of instances where applicant exhibited professional and/or ethical decision-making.
