LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, LAKEWOOD, OHIO GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT

INDIVIDUAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI, Cincinnati, Ohio CINCINNATUS XII, SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Amount: Ranges from $2,000 annually up to full tuition, room and board and books for length of undergrad program. Scholarship is renewable with 3.2 G.PA.

Eligibility: Exemplary high school record, must meet one of following criteria: top 5% of class, ACT 26 or SAT 1170. SAT combined CR and M score of 1170. Awards based on competition at the Univ. of Cincinnati.

How to apply: Submit application for admission, transcript and test scores by December 15. Additional competition information sent to incoming freshmen that meet criteria. Two other scholarships are listed on the UC website www.financialaid.uc.edu/scholars

DENISON UNIVERSITY, Denison, Ohio

Amount: Denison University is committed to the importance of diversity and continues to provide an excellent environment of learning. Merit and Diversity Scholarships range from $6,000- $35,000. Eligibility: Nominate 2 seniors from underrepresented population and or 1st generation students 3.0 GPA or higher. How to apply: To apply go to www.denison.edu/admissions.gccohio .

Deadline: Must be nominated by Sept 18th.

EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, Ypsilanti, Michigan PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: Sixteen full-ride Presidential Scholarships $60,000 over four years; Regents Scholarship is a four-year award that pays $12,000 over four years. Thirty Regents- Gold Scholarships (Tuition and Fees for 4 years) are available to incoming freshman who have competed in the President Scholarship.

Eligibility: Graduating high school senior in 2010, admissible to Eastern Michigan for fall 2009. A student needs 3.70 GPA to be eligible for the Presidential Scholarship.

1 EMORY UNIVERSITY, Atlanta, Georgia EMORY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Amount: Typically range from two-thirds tuition to full tuition, room and board, and fees over four years.

Eligibility: High school seniors who have demonstrated qualities of forceful and unselfish character, intellectual and personal vigor, outstanding academic achievement, impressive skills in communication, significant leadership and creativity in school or community, and clear potential for enriching the lives of their contemporaries at Emory University. Must demonstrate high scores on aptitude tests and have excellent academic and personal records.

How to apply: You must submit a brief (750 words) about yourself, focusing on one or two of your principal intellectual interests. You must also submit an Emory University application and be accepted to the University to be qualified for this scholarship program. Applications are available in the guidance dept.

Deadline: November 1, 2009.

GOIZUETA SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Amount: Typically range from two-thirds to full tuition, fees, and study abroad options.

Eligibility: Strong interest in Business. Leadership skills and involved in community, internships and entrepreneurial activities. Student needs to have superior academic record.

How to apply: Please submit 750 word essays, be nominated by your counselor and complete

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY Amount: Four-year, $20,000 scholarship to Indiana State University. They also receive a new wireless laptop, professional development account worth $3,000 to use for education related international travel, internship opportunities.

Eligibility: A GPA of 3.25 or higher, Rank in the top one-third of class. Test score of at least 1000 out of 1600 on the SAT or 21 ACT. Plan to major or minor in a program offered in the College of Business. Intend to pursue a career in the financial services. Students need to have demonstrated leadership success.

2 MIAMI UNIVERSITY Oxford, OH HARRISON SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: Miami’s premier scholarship program. It provides four-year renewable awards for tuition, fees, on-campus room and board.

Eligibility: Average 34 ACT or 1530 SAT (CR&M). Must have a rigorous high school curriculum and as well as strong record of extracurricular involvement. Harrison applications are reviewed for much more than these indicators alone. This scholarship is renewable with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

How to apply: To be considered for admission into the Harrison Scholars Program, students must submit the Honors Application in addition to the regular admission application submitted to the Office of Admission. Harrison Scholars applications must be submitted by November 3. For more information about the Harrison Scholarship, visit the Harrison Scholarship website.

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Columbus, OH MAXIMUS SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: $2,700 ($10,800 four-year value) and the opportunity to compete for more (see Maximus Competition, below) Note: Due to the award's value, Maximus Scholars are not eligible for the Provost or Trustees scholarship.

Eligibility: The Maximus Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to admitted Columbus campus students; those considered rank in the top three percent of their classes with ACT composite scores of 32 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1420 or higher. Students must apply for admission by December 1 for consideration.

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY THE MORRILL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Amount: Varies on Scholarship awarded

Eligibility: Be a U.S. citizen and/or legal permanent resident of the United States. Be admissible to the Columbus campus for the autumn quarter after high school graduation. Meet two out of three academic requirements listed below:

o top 20% class rank o 23 ACT composite or 1070 combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores o 3.3 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) Have demonstrated leadership, commitment to diversity, and community service

 Applicant's status as a potential first-generation college graduate  Applicant's race/ethnic/tribal background , Socioeconomic factors, Ohio county of residence

Deadline: December 1, 2009. 3 OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY, Delaware, Ohio LELAND F. & HELEN SCHUBERT HONORS PROGRAM

Amount: Students nominated may be eligible to receive one of 25 Presidential Scholarships (full tuition award), or one of 60 Trustee Scholarships (3/4 tuition award) or one of 60 Faculty Scholarships (half tuition ).

Eligibility: Students whose class rank places them in the top 10% of their graduation class with SAT critical reading and math is 1920 or higher or ACT composite score is 27 or higher.

URSULINE COLLEGE, Pepper Pike, Ohio PRE-ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: Students start a Bachelor’s degree in Math or Biology and finish their Master’s degree in Engineering at Cleveland State University. Annual there are 3 $4,700 scholarships. The Master’s degrees would be in environmental, chemical, electrical, industrial, mechanical, civil, or software engineering.

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, St. Louis, Missouri DANFORTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Amount: Full and partial tuition for all four years.

Eligibility: Merit based program that looks at a student who embraces high ideals, whose life choices are guided by personal integrity, selflessness, a commitment to community and academic excellence.

How to apply: Must be nominated by high school counselor, complete nomination form, essay, transcript and college admission Application online at: www.wustl.edu.

Deadline: January 15 2010.

NETWORK SCHOLARSHIPS

COCA-COLA SCHOLARS FOUNDATION, Atlanta, Georgia

Amount: 250 achievement-based scholarships. Fifty awards are for $20,000 payable over four- year period; the other 200 awards are for $10,000 also payable over four years. These awards can be used for any line of study at any U.S. accredited college/university.

Eligibility: Well-rounded students with highly developed interests in their community who are leaders in their schools. They are often employed during the school year and balance extracurricular activities with strong academic performances.

Eligibility: Intend to earn a degree in engineering or a related science. Be a citizen of the United States. Meet minimum requirements with regard to GPA, SAT/ACT scores.

Amount: Ranges from $1000 to $10,000.

WENDY’S RESTAURANT – HEISMAN MEMORIAL AWARD

Amount: Scholarship amounts vary

Eligibility: All Senior student athletes who have at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport. If 5 students complete the process your school can receive $500 as well. School representative must review your application online.

Young ARTS A program of National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts

Open to high school senior artists, in the performing, literary and visual arts.

Artist must be a high school senior, and a permanent resident of the United States of America. MISCELLANEOUS SCHOLARSHIPS

CAVS/FIRSTMERIT 2009-2010 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, Cleveland, Ohio

Amount: Ten $1,000 scholarships.

Eligibility: All seniors who intend to pursue a post high school education are eligible. Criteria: academic achievement, including ACT/SAT scores, 40%, extracurricular achievement, could include work experience and/or community involvement, 30%, and essay 30%.

How to apply: Applications available online at www.nba.com/cavaliers/community/education. Transcripts, essay, and letter of recommendation from a teacher must be submitted. Participation in basketball is NOT a factor.

Deadline: February 20, 2010.

6 CLEVELAND BROWNS MARION MOTLEY SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: Four-year renewable scholarship of $2,500 per year, and a summer internship within the Cleveland Browns Organization.

Eligibility: 2.5GPA, 18 ACT or 860 on the math and verbal portions of the SAT must be enrolled in high school located in Northeast Ohio, and plan to enroll in college. Students should plan to major in areas that would lead to a career working for a professional sports organization. Two essays are required. Extracurricular activities resume or List of Activities. Emphasis will be placed on ability to clearly articulate academic and career goals, students who are the first or second generation in their family to attend college, service to the community, maturity and motivation.

GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Renewable awards for African American, American Indians/ Alaskan natives, Hispanic Americans and Asian Pacific Americans who plan on pursuing technology related studies. Must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S. Winners are chosen for academic performance in math and science, participation in activities, leadership potential, and financial need. In addition, students must possess a minimum 3.3 GPA. You must plan to enroll in an accredited college or university as a full time student. Must have Demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities. Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. THE MG JAMES URSANO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM For dependent children of Soldiers on federal active duty, retired, or deceased while in active or retired status.

7 RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM, Charlottesville, Virginia

Amount: Each year, up to twenty students will be selected as a Ron Brown Scholars and receive $10,000 annually for four years, based on financial need.

Eligibility: Awarded to academically talented, highly motivated African-American high school seniors who intend to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time. Student must have traits of excellence, leadership, commitment to public service, and a desire to make a difference. While financially needy students receive preference, emphasis is placed upon academic achievement and community service. Most recipients are in the top 5% of their class and are involved in volunteer efforts within their community.

Deadline: November 1, 2009 for the Ron Brown Scholar Program and forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers. January 9, 2009. Final deadline date and will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program only.

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU STUDENT OF INTEGRITY

Amount: 3 $1000 scholarships and one $2500 to high school seniors in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Lorain counties.

Eligibility: The student must have minimum GPA and through leadership and service personalized strong character ethics.

How to apply: Entry forms will be available in Room 133.

OHIO JUNIOR MISS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Amount: Vary on State and whether a contestant or a winner.

Eligibility: Areas of competition are scholastic, interview, fitness, talent, self expression.

JOHN F KENNEDY- PROFILE IN COURAGE ESSAY CONTEST

Amount: 1st place $5000, 2nd place $1000, 5 3rd place of $500.

“VOICE OF DEMOCRACY”- ESSAY CONTEST

Veterans from our local VFW Hall have contacted the H2O Office with information about an essay contest for high school students (Grades 9-12).

Amount: The VOD essay contest provides more than $3 million in scholarships. This year’s theme is “Does America Still Have Heroes”? The first place winner of all the VFW Department will receive a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or technical school. Other national prizes range from $1, 0000 - $16,000.

Eligibility: Students can enter the essay contest by going onto the “Voice of Democracy “essay contest website and printing off the entry forms at: www.vfw.org .

How to apply: Applications are also available in the H2O Office.

Deadline: The essay contest entry forms are due back to the H2O office by Thursday, October 29th.

9 THE IMAGINE AMERICA FOUNDATION (IAF)

Each Business or Technical college that is listed by state on the website actively accepts applications from students seeking a scholarship to attend their school example Bryant and Stratton and Ohio Technical College.

Amount: Students who are interested in attending a partner college can apply for a $1000 scholarship through the Imagine America Foundation’s website.

Eligibility: Your students may be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend one of our new participating colleges in your area.
