MEMORANDUM FOR ALL DRILL TEAM MEMBERS AND PARENETS/GUARDIANS

FROM: MSgt Michael P. Thiergart

SUBJECT: Drill Standards, Practice, and Code of Conduct

1. Welcome back to Lebanon HS and the LHS JROTC Drill Team – a special welcome to all new team members and incoming freshman. We had a tremendous year last year – earning the title #1 in the state! This places us in an enviable position – we must work extra hard to maintain our standing and reputation as the best AFJROTC Drill Team in Ohio!! We lost a few solid experienced cadets to graduation, but I'm confident we can continue our tradition of excellence. We have great cadets and I believe we can maintain our #1 standing – we have worked to hard to give it up. We reached our goals last year, now our goal is to get better, retain our #1 status and possibly compete on the national level. I hope I can count on you to put forth the effort and energy to develop and hone your skills and teach our new cadets – more importantly, by bringing a level of commitment and desire of a true championship team.

2. As with any new year, it is extremely important that old and new Drill Team members understand the requirements/standards. The following is in addition to the Student Code of Conduct found in the Lebanon City School District’s Student Handbook and JROTC Cadet Guide:

ELIGIBILITY:

To participate you must be enrolled in JROTC program at Lebanon High School and be a solid member of the cadet corps. Any failing quarter grade will be grounds for placement on probation and possible removal from team as determined by Drill Team Director. Probation will continue until the following quarter grading period and academic eligibility is achieved. Any failure in consecutive quarter grading periods will result in immediate suspension and possible removal from Drill Team as determined by the ASI. Drill Team members will be held to the highest of standards in conduct, academics, uniform wear, and character – you will be required to set the example!

ATTENDANCE/PRACTICE:

Drill Team practice will be held Monday thru Thursday mornings before school (6:00 AM to 7:10 AM). Additional practices will be scheduled (afternoons or weekends) in order to prepare for Drill Meets as necessary. Must attend all practices and not be late – policy is as follows and as listed in JROTC Cadet Guide”

a. Absent: failure to show for practice without a valid excuse or approval from ASI (follow disciplinary schedule) b. Tardy: Two lates equals one absence (follow disciplinary schedule) c. Any cadet who displays unacceptable conduct during drill practice or at a drill meet will face disciplinary action as determined by the ASI – suspension or dismissal from the team is possible.

DISCIPLINARY SCHEDULE:

a. First Offense: Placed on probation b. Second Offense: Cannot attend next Drill Meet c. Third Offense: Suspended from team as directed by ASI

Today’s Cadet, Tomorrow’s Citizen EXAMPLE:

Day three practice: Tardy (no action—ASI will counsel) Day five practice: Unexcused absence (Placed on Probation—ASI will counsel again) Day 10 practice: Tardy (Second offense – cannot attend next Drill Meet) Day 15 practice: Tardy (no action) Day 18 practice: Tardy (suspended from team as directed by ASI)

Student-cadet who is absent from classes the day of or day before a scheduled meet will not be permitted to participate if he/she has not signed in prior to 4th period and must not sign out prior to 4th period. ASI will review each and every situation and grant exceptions if circumstances warrant it.

TRANSPORTATION:

Drill team member will travel to and from meets by transportation arranged by the school. Special consideration will be given only in the case of injury or illness or written request from parent/guardian and approved by team director.

EQUIPMENT/UNIFORMS:

Each team member is responsible for all school owned equipment/uniforms issued for his/her use. Student will be held financially liable for any damages or destruction to equipment/uniforms within his/her care. Drill team members will be issued additional uniform items in order to maintain the highest level of uniform wear and care.

PERSONAL CONDUCT:

Your conduct must be beyond reproach at all times (this includes student drama) – at school, out of school, at drill meets – YOU ALL GET THE PICTURE. Any team member whose conduct is judged to reflect discredit upon the team, school, themselves, or AFJROTC will be subject to disciplinary action as determined by the Drill Team Director and school administrators. Remember, I hold drill team members to a higher standard – you set the example for cadets to follow. Bottom line: INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND WILL BE GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL FROM THE DRILL TEAM.

DRILL MEETS:

Drill Meets will be held at other participating High Schools in the local area, (Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland). We may also travel out of state to Kentucky and Illinois – some meets will require an overnight stay. A firm schedule will be provided in the near future. Parental permission slips and Emergency Medical Forms will be required.

FORMS AND RELEASES:

To participate, you and your parents/guardian must sign the attached agreement indicating acceptance of the Drill Team rules, standards, and code of conduct – agreement attached.
