MINUTES Math Department Meeting April 21, 2009
1. Report from the developmental sequence committee Dan discussed recent statistics relating success in 098 and 112 with whether a student took previous developmental courses (see tables below). The results are inconclusive and call for more data and analysis.
2. Reports from Textbook Committees The three book committees that looked at alternatives to current texts going into new editions (133-134-201, 112, 120) decided not to change textbooks. Details: Calculus (133, 134, 201) – Cengage, the Larson publisher, will hold a short session on May 21 (grading day) at 10:00 to review the supplementary materials that are available for use with the book. College Algebra (112) – It was decided to order the new edition of Blitzer bundled with MathXL ($2.50), Chapter Test Prep Video on CD (no charge), and the student solutions manual ($2.50). So all sections of 112 in the fall of 2009 will have MathXL with the textbook, whether or not a teacher decides to use the software with the course. In the spring of 2010 and after, things will be more messy: a teacher will have to specify whether or not to require MathXL and students in a section requiring the software will have to purchase it separately if they buy a used book for the course. (Details below.)
3. Goal Setting for next year The final departmental meeting of the semester will be on May 12.
4. Independent Study options Dean Miksa has required that all courses be taken in sequence, with necessary prerequisites. In some special cases, however, he may OK an independent study section for a special case student (say, someone who is misplaced in a course due to bad advice about the need to take the COMPASS exam).
5. 098 Final The 098 departmental final is now completed. Teachers will be expected to use the exam starting this semester, although, for now, they may administer and grade it in any way they wish (e.g., giving partial credit for worked out problems). At the present time, rather than using the exam for assessment, only informal feedback will be solicited. 6. Miscellaneous Coordinators. Lauren and Dan have agreed to be co-coordinators for the coming school year. However, Dan will not begin until January 2010 and Mary Ann will continue until that time. Conference announcements. It was suggested that postings of upcoming math professional conferences be added to eMath. This has now been done (under Miscellaneous Files).

Videos on DVD have been extensively revised and provide a 10—13 minute lecture for each section of the textbook.
