1.0 Purpose

1.1 To establish a standard procedure for calibration of Inside Indicating Caliper, Dial or Digital.

2.0 Requirements

2.1 The calibration laboratory shall be furnished with all items of equipment (including reference materials) required for the correct performance of calibrations and tests. In those cases where the laboratory needs to use equipment outside its permanent control, it shall ensure that the relevant requirements of this section are met.

2.2 All measuring and testing equipment having an effect on the accuracy or validity of calibrations or tests shall be calibrated and/or verified before being put into service. The laboratory shall have an established program for the calibration and verification of its measuring and test equipment. The program will ensure the recall or removal from service of any standard or equipment that has exceeded its calibration interval or is otherwise judged to be unreliable.

2.3 The laboratory shall use appropriate methods and procedures for all calibrations and tests and related activities within its responsibility (including sampling, handling, transport and storage, preparation of items, estimation of uncertainty of measurement and analysis of calibration and/or test data). They shall be consistent with the accuracy required and with any standard specifications relevant to the calibrations or tests concerned.

2.4 The laboratory shall have documented instructions on the use and operation of all relevant equipment, on the handling and preparation of items, and for calibration and/or testing, where the absence of such instructions could jeopardize the calibrations or tests. All instructions, standards, manuals and reference data relevant to the work of the laboratory shall be maintained up-to-date and be readily available to the staff.

5.0 Special Precautions

5.1 Use extreme care when removing dirt, fingerprints and other foreign substances so that cleaning solutions do not enter internal portions of this gage.

5.2 Use a hard Arkansas stone to remove only the positive surface imperfections on gaging surfaces.

5.3 Ensure cotton gloves are worn to protect gage blocks from exposure to oils on hands.

6.0 Accuracy / Required Range / Measurement Uncertainties

6.1 Accuracy shall be within one scale division.

6.2 Required range shall be within manufacturer specifications.

6.3 If the tolerance is specified by the manufacturer or if customers require tolerances other than specified above, these considerations should govern the acceptability of the test results.

NOTE: Measurement uncertainties are budgeted and calculated using the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty Management (GUM). Reported uncertainties expressed at approximately the 95% confidence level using a coverage factor of K=2. Unless otherwise stated, a Test Uncertainty Ratio of 4:1 or greater was used. Measurement uncertainty is not taken into account when determining if the instrument under test is within the tolerance limits. Standards used are traceable to NIST. Calibrations are in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 9000, ANSI/NCSL Z540-1. .

7.0 Procedure

7.1 Visually examine the device for any obvious defects that would affect its accuracy or function. Record the “as found” condition of the device onto the Job Log. If discrepancies are noted, discontinue calibration and refer to paragraph 9.1 (Out of Tolerance Conditions).

7.2 Obtain a random reading and or accuracy “field test” from the device. Record the “as found” condition onto the Job Log. If discrepancies are noted, discontinue calibration and refer to paragraph 9.1 (Out of Tolerance Conditions).

7.3 Verify that identification markings of the gage is distinct and in agreement with the Calibration Work Order.

7.4 Determine minimum and maximum measurement range of indicating caliper.

7.5 Select one Certifi Template that represents values within the range of the caliper.

7.6 Clean both the receiver pads, mounting surfaces of the CF-CA caliper fixtures and the jaw alignment block using a cloth and ZEP I.D. Red Cleaner.

7.7 Mount caliper fixtures onto Mic-Trac.

7.8 Insert the jaw alignment block between the CF-CA blocks, making sure that ¼” of the block extends above the fixtures.

7.9 Apply enough force on the Y axis adjust knob to hold the jaw alignment block between the caliper fixtures.

7.10 Secure Lock.

7.11 Clean the caliper and clamp the jaws to the jaw alignment block.

7.12 Using a 5/32” hex wrench, tighten the clamp on top of the right caliper fixture.

7.13 Tight the clamp on top of the left caliper fixture. Release the lock and remove the jaw alignment block.

7.14 Using the Y axis adjust knob, bring the jaws of the caliper together until the dial of the caliper reads zero.

7.15 Click on the CERTIFI monitor icon to open the CERTIFI Monitor window.

7.16 Choose the “S” axis from the pull down block.

7.17 Bring the mic-trac jaws together and click the zero button twice.

7.18 Enter the gage measurements in the measured column and send to table, until all measurements are recorded.

7.19 Loosen the caliper fixture and remove caliper.

7.20 Measure the ID jaws using the Vernier Masters, to 2.5”. Enter into Certifi.

7.21 Using a 2” Gage Block, measure the Depth Rod on caliper (if available). Record in Certifi.

8.0 Out of Tolerance Conditions

8.1 If any results are found to be significantly out of tolerance during the calibration/verification process, notification shall be made to the customer . If appropriate, state the out of tolerance condition with the associated measurement data so that appropriate action can be taken.

10.0 Records

10.1 The records for instrument requiring calibration shall include an individual record of calibration. This record shall provide a description or identification of the item, calibration interval, date calibrated, identification of the calibration source, calibration results (data and/or condition status) and calibration action taken (adjusted, repaired, new value assigned, de-rated, etc.).

11.0 Calibration Status

11.1 Instruments shall be labeled to indicate calibration or verification status. The label shall identify specific date calibrated (date, month, year, Julian date, or equivalent) and the specific calibration due date or usage equivalent. Items not calibrated to their full capability or which have other limitations of use, shall be labeled or otherwise identified as to the limitations. When it is impractical to apply a label directly to an item, the label may be affixed to the instrument container or some other suitable means may be used to reflect calibration status. Tamper resistant seals are affixed to operator accessible controls or adjustments, which if moved will invalidate the calibration. The quality system shall provide instructions for disposition of equipment with broken tamper resistant seals.

12.0 Storage and Handling

12.1 Instrument shall be handled, stored, and transported in a manner which shall not adversely affect the calibration or condition of the equipment.
