Long Term Plan for Year 7 English

Autumn Term 1 (8 weeks) Description Assessment Writing for a specific purpose – 6 weeks Students develop their group and independent learning skills and Writing AFs creating class magazines revise the range of types of writing found in magazines: articles, S&L – group work UNIT 1 advertisements, journalistic writing, editorials, problem pages, instruction writing. Write and produce a magazine as a class or in groups. Writing to review 2 weeks Students read a range of reviews identifying the features of Writing – review UNIT 2 this type of writing. They then watch short films or extracts from a film and write a review, revising the drafting process. Autumn Term 2 (7 weeks) Novel – Holes by Louis Sachar 7 weeks Students explore a whole novel developing their reading skills Reading AFs UNIT 3 and completing writing tasks that are relevant to the text. Spring Term 1 (6 weeks) Description Assessment Gothic Horror 4 weeks An exploration of Gothic fiction from classic Gothic fiction such Reading AFs as Frankenstein and Dracula to modern horror and vampire Writing – narrative UNIT 4 fiction. Students write a gothic story or story opening using descriptive language. They also study how language, style and content has changed. The Assassin (Optional) 2 weeks Story writing unit – could be linked to Gothic Horror? Spring Term 2 (5 weeks) Issues 2 weeks Reading, writing and evaluating campaign and charity leaflets RAF6 looking at persuasive techniques and identifying bias. Working in WAF7 UNIT 5 groups, students research an issue and prepare a formal group S&L presentation. Poetry 3 weeks Explore T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. Revise RAF4/5 poetic devices and write poetry of their own. Students perform WAF7 UNIT 6 poems. Continue the theme of cats and discuss cat myths and S&L sayings; research where these myths originated.

Summer Term 1 (6 weeks) Description Assessment Language Change 3 weeks Discover how the English language has changed through history Emails – formal v from Anglo-Saxon (Old) English to modern times, looking at informal language UNIT 7 accents and dialects. Students should also be able to describe Text message poetry how language is used in different contexts. An introduction to Shakespeare 3 weeks Research Shakespeare’s life. Light touch on extracts from Performance Shakespeare’s plays. UNIT 8 Summer Term 2 (7 weeks) Drama – Millions 4 weeks Focus on characterisation and performance. Reading AFs Performance UNIT 9 Revision – Students as Teachers 2 weeks Children become teachers, working in groups to plan, create resources for and deliver lessons to the class about different skills that they have learnt in English over the year.
