Further to your request for information, which was received by Manchester City Council on 26 November 2008 , I have now considered it under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and my response is detailed below.

1. If any current policies such as I have described exist in written form, or if any current policies exist which includes such terms, a copy of those policies;

Manchester City Council does not operate a ‘no-firing policy’.

2. If no such policies exist, a copy of any current HR policies which make reference to dismissal and the circumstances under which staff may be dismissed;

I am enclosing a copy of both the disciplinary and capability policies which govern conduct and performance issues. The policy for managing absence is currently under review and can be provided once the review is completed.

3. A breakdown of the number of staff who have been dismissed (defined as having their employment with the Council terminated on grounds other than resignation, transfer or redundancy) in the past five years, if possible by department.
