Nellie’s is looking for Volunteer Board Members

About Nellie’s Nellie’s operates a 36 bed emergency shelter for women and children who are homeless and/or leaving violence. Nellie’s also operates a community support and outreach program for low income and socially isolated women and children in the community.

Our Mission is to operate programs and services for women and children who have and are experiencing oppressions such as violence, poverty and homelessness. Nellie’s is a community based feminist organization which operates within an anti-racist, anti-oppression framework. We are committed to social change through education and advocacy, to achieve social justice for all women and children.

About the Board of Directors Nellie’s Board of Directors provide strategic leadership for Nellie’s in accordance to the organisation’s Mission, Vision and Values. The board consists of 10 directors.

We are currently seeking three (3) self-identified women to fill board vacancies for a two year term, renewable up to three terms in total.

Nellie’s is committed to the development of an agency that reflects the women it serves. Applications from Aboriginal/Indigenous Women, World Majority Women/Women of Colour, Lesbians, Bisexual Women, Trans Women, Women with DisAbilities, Women who have experienced Violence and Consumer Survivors are strongly encouraged to apply.

Currently Nellie’s is looking for women with experience in the following areas:

- Working from an Anti-Racist/Anti-oppression Framework - Feminist pedagogy and practice - Community based skills, including service delivery and as a service user - Community Outreach - Governance - Human Resources - Fundraising - Marketing and Communications - Strategic Planning - Social Justice - Government Relations - Policy Development - Evaluation (Program and Organizational Performance) - Risk Management

Previous Board experience is preferred.

Responsibilities:

. Attend monthly Board Meetings and the Annual General Meeting . Participate on one of the Board Committees (meetings once per month and as needed) . Participate in the ongoing development and implementation of a long term vision and strategic plan for Nellie’s. . Ensure the programs and services reflect the mission and vision of the agency. . Support and participate in the activities of the organization including fundraising, community education and social justice. . Commit to an average of 10 hours per month.

All interested person are invited to a Board information session on Wednesday, April 2 from 6:30 – 7:30 at Nellie’s Admin Office, 754 Queen Street East (Broadview & Queen). This will be an informal opportunity for you to meet with current Board members and talk with them about their experience on Nellie’s Board.
