Class Objective United States History for grade 8 covers events and issues from the Age of Exploration through Reconstruction and the western movement, emphasizing the 18th and 19th centuries. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to exploration, colonization, the Revolutionary War, constitutional issues, nation building, the Civil War, Reconstruction, western movement and current events. Standards 1 and 2 should be integrated throughout the course rather than taught independently. Although the emphasis of this course is on the 18th and 19th centuries, additional content may be covered as time permits. - Utah State of Education
Class Rules No food or drink in the classroom! (Water is okay) Students will have access to hall passes that much be carried with them when leaving the classroom. Follow the 5 B’s! o Be prompt! o Be prepared! o Be positive! o Be productive! o Be polite! Follow the PEAKS Program everyday: o P- Prepared to Learn o E-Excel Daily o A-Act Responsibly o K-Kindness Towards o S-Silent Transitions o Materials It is recommended that students bring a 3-ring binder with loose-leaf paper, and a folder for this class. Bring a pen or pencil to class everyday. Failure to come to class prepared will hurt the student’s participation grade. Assignments The following is a breakdown of how grades will be calculated in this class, and how much each category is worth every term. o Participation (10% of grade)- You will be graded on how often you volunteer to answer questions, lead in-group activities, and help the flow of the class. o Homework/Classwork (20% of grade)- Not all homework or classwork assignments will be collected, but when they are they will either be graded, or simply marked with a check to show completion. If work is not completed on that day, then a zero will be entered and that will be calculated toward the homework grade. o Quizzes (20 % of grade)- Quiz’s are shorter assessments that will measure your understanding of the material in any given unit. A quiz can be focused on vocabulary, a map, or just a few questions. o Tests and Projects (50% of grade)- This will make up the biggest part of the grade per term. These grades will cover either entire units, or very detailed sections of the unit.
Late work policy- Assignments that are handed in on time will be graded for full credit. After the due date, students have a week to turn in work for 75% credit, and two weeks for 50% credit. No late work is accepted two weeks after the assigned due date unless otherwise specified.
Tardies Tardies are in accordance with the school tardy policy. It is important to be present in class everyday and on time.
