Job Description Yorkshire & Humber Patient Safety Nursing Leadership Fellowship Improvement Academy Nursing Leadership Fellows for Yorkshire and Humberside Up to 12 months Fixed-Term Opportunity

The Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network’s Improvement Academy is offering unique fellowships in nursing/midwifery leadership with a strong emphasis on patient safety and quality improvement. We are seeking two exceptional nurses/midwives to undertake a year-long attachment and to develop the skills and knowledge that will help them become nurse/midwifery leaders of the future. The fellowship role is part of Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber’s Future Leaders Programme, and the nursing/ midwifery leadership fellows will join medical leadership fellows undertaking the same programme.

Improvement Academy Leadership Programme The Leadership programme will offer one year out of practice to two qualified nurses or midwives at Band 6 or Band 7 level.

Applicants must have attained at least two years post-registration experience prior to taking up appointment to the post, which is expected to commence from February 2017.

The aims of the programme are: 1. To learn and help develop quality improvement and patient safety strategies with front- line clinical teams. 2. To enhance skills and competencies in quality and safety improvement essential for future nursing leaders. 3. To lead and co-ordinate regional projects with wide-ranging and lasting impact. 4. To build a regional network of expert contacts with today’s clinical and NHS management leaders. 5. To develop competencies relevant for nine leadership domains as described by the Healthcare Leadership Model.

Setting The Improvement Academy, based at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is a leading national centre in patient safety and quality improvement. The team has developed international-calibre training and research programmes on patient safety improvement.

The Nursing Leadership Fellows will lead applied innovative projects in Patient Safety within Yorkshire and Humber. These include projects as part of the Yorkshire & Humber Patient Safety Collaborative programmes which have regional and national relevance. The Nursing Fellows will work with Trusts across the Yorkshire and Humber region in scaling up improvement programmes; complimenting and building on what organisations are already doing. Examples of current programmes include:  Prevention of Acute Kidney Injury;  Pressure sore prevention;  Falls prevention;  Proactive management of the deteriorating patient; and  Supporting theatre teams to deliver safer surgery. Fellows will also have the opportunity to develop their own projects.

Fellows will also get involved in masterclasses to expose people to leading edge thinking, training to ensure that healthcare workers in our region have access to improvement knowledge and skills and roundtable discussions where organisations can learn from each other's experience.

There is no compulsory clinical component to the fellowship but if the Fellow wishes to maintain clinical skills an opportunity to undertake clinical work will be offered within their specialty through Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The structure of this will be done on an individual/specialty basis.

Workplace learning will form the core basis for the attachment. During induction the Fellow will meet with key Improvement Academy staff and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Board members. They will be expected to work on key Improvement Academy projects during the year but also have the opportunity to select additional project work of interest relevant to the post.

Formal professional development will take place through patient safety training courses which involve multidisciplinary teams collaborating across primary and secondary care and using improvement methodologies to achieve improvements in patient safety. A strong theoretical foundation will be provided to cover relevant subjects such as human factors, organisational factors, error theory, quality improvement and behavioural change theory. In addition, fellows are encouraged to undertake post-graduate training in patient safety or leadership, e.g. PGCert in Leadership and Management, or Patient Safety; or NHS Leadership Academy training. Academic and research experience will be gained from active involvement in the evaluation of applied patient safety programmes. Experience in promoting patient involvement will be gained though working with our patient networks and fellows will be encouraged to publish patient safety papers in leading peer-reviewed publications.

Fellows will link with others in a similar role as part of a regional network developed and supported by Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber.

Supervision Supervision will be undertaken by Alison Lovatt and Angela Grange who will provide end of placement assessments and formative feedback based on the leadership domains. They will also undertake regular appraisal meetings, provide feedback, support the fellow in their workplace activities, offer mentoring and guidance.
