Circulating Laptops in Music Library -- 07-14 Tech Fee Proposal

Goals and Rationale Begin circulating laptops in the Music Library using similar procedures to the laptop program in Rosenthal Library by Fall 2008.

Bringing Rosenthal Library’s laptop program to the Music Library would allow students to access Queens College resources, work on their homework, and listen to and watch CDs and DVDs checked out from the Music Library. The Music Library, and the Media Center in the Music Library that the Aaron Copland School of Music kindly maintains, has a limited number of public computer terminals. During the semester, students often have to wait for access to computers and QC’s electronic resources. The Music Library has an extensive CD collection and is building an impressive DVD collection. There is no DVD player in the Music Library, and the CD players available to the public are old and often broken. Adding laptops to the Music Library would provide students with additional computers for student use, access to vital resources and software, and more reliable and portable equipment for listening to and viewing the Music Library’s recording collection.

The Music Library laptop program would follow the same policies and procedures as the Rosenthal Library laptop program (see attached draft of Music Laptop Loan policies). Laptops would be charged and stored in a locking cabinet similar to that used by Rosenthal. Patrons would sign a contract agreeing to the borrowing terms and policies (see attached draft contract).
