APPENDIX 4-A

STORAGE OF Ti-6Al-4V (Titanium Alloy) SCRAP

1. Description

a. Ti-6Al-4V (General Electric Specification C50TF12) Titanium Alloy scrap deemed excess from the F136 engine program, transferred from DCMA to the National Defense Stockpile is in the form of large and smaller rings, and future reciepts may be in same, or other forms of machining scrap, or partially manufactured piece parts. All material received should be accompanied with documentation indicating prior demilitarization in accordance with original contractual requirements. Ti-6Al-4V scrap is non-hazardous, suitable for long term storage, and can be reinserted into supply chains for reprocessing in the event of a national emergency.

2. Packaging. Rings, turnings, chips, machinings, or scrap in other physical forms may be received loose in box pallets, wooden boxes, tri-wall palletized containers or dums, or strapped onto wood, metal or polymer based pallets. Material shall not protrude beyond, or outside the outer measurements of the pallets, or exceed 48” in hieght to include the pallet base.

3. Marking

a. Each pallet or container shall be identified in accordance with appropriate NDS labelling methodology as to alloy type, applicable grade, and contained weight, and be traceable to all available documents relating to receipt and origin.

4. Storage

a. Ti-6Al-4V scrap shall be stored in accordance with appropriate NDS methodology, in controlled-access warehousing, with floor load capable of sustaining minimum of not less than 3,000 pounds per square foot, or the equivalent of four full 48” x 48” tri-wall box pallets full to capacity each, stacked four high.

b. The manner of storage shall ensure lot integrity, facilitate taking a physical inventory count, and in the event that the President or the Congress directs the release of these materials enables the inventory to be packaged and shipped to any location inside the United States within 24 hours of notification by the Government.

5. Precautions To Be Taken

a. The material is in solid metal form, therefore no health or safety issues with regard to dust or fumes is applicable. May cause eye irritation or breathing difficulties if dust is generated.

b. Proper personal protective equipment shall be worn when handling product to protect against potential eye injury due to springing of contained metal, and potential for lacerations to extremeties as burrs and sharp edges are likely present. Wear protective gloves, protective clothes, eye protection, and face protection. Avoid breathing dust. Wash hand and exposed skin thoroughtly after handling. In case of inadequate ventilation, wear respiratory protection.

6. Average Storage Factor

a. The average gross square feet per short ton for the storage of this material is not applicable due to the unpredictable variations in shape, size, thicknesses.
