DESEXING INFORMATION

At Briarmist, we believe it is important to take advantage of the latest in veterinary knowledge to ensure our puppies are given the very best chance at a long and happy life.

As a result, all of our puppies are given a thorough veterinary health check and are regularly wormed and vaccinated. In the case of pets (regardless of age) both males & females are de- sexed before going to their new homes. We have chosen to take advantage of new veterinary technology concerning juvenile de- sexing which indicates no health disadvantage. It also stops unwanted litters. We believe that all responsible breeders should consider this idea, in the best interest of their dogs.

De-sexing contracts and limited registers will not stop unwanted litters. The fact that a dog is purebred or registered or has pedigree papers does not make it worthy for breeding.

There are many misconceptions about canine reproduction - - the age at which surgery can be done. Most owners prefer to wait until the dog or bitch is six-to-eight months old, but this may be too late to prevent a litter. - some project their own feelings about loss of reproductive capacity on to their pets, and think that sterilization is cruel. - there are men who have a difficult time dealing with neutering of their male pets.

The truth is - - male dogs are usually better pets if they are neutered. They have less desire to roam, to mark territory or to exert dominance over family members. They are also healthier pets: no testicles means no testicular cancer, which can occur among aging intact male dogs.

- females also tend to be better pets if they do not experience oestrus every six-to-nine months. Repeated heat cycles subject the reproductive system to uterine and mammary cancers and uterine infections. Some bitches experience false pregnancies that can be a bother to deal with.

- Dogs and bitches do not get fat simply as a result of sterilization surgery. They gain weight if they eat too much and exercise too little.

The Advantages of Desexing

- Healthier, happier family Pets - No unplanned litters - Eliminates risk of testicular cancer. - Reduces risk of mammary cancer. - Reduces risk of Pyometra (uterine infection). - Eliminates risk of uterine tumours (given uterus is removed) - Eliminates risk of ovarian cancer. - Reduces urine marking & mounting. - May reduce roaming.
