CLARKE ELEMENTARY PTCO A Parent-Teacher-Community Organization MEETING MINUTES October 7th, 2013

The meeting of the Clarke Elementary PTCO was held at 5:35pm at Clarke Elementary. In attendance were 2013-2014 board members President Carrie Benda, Vice-President Sue Scrivner, Secretary Peggy Lundquist, Treasurer Tonya Gonseth and School Liaison Kim Schade.

Principal’s Update. IPads are in rooms in kindergarten through 2nd grade. They should be in 3- 5th grade rooms soon. Friday staff went to Creston to learn from regional teachers about technology they are using. There were lots of good ideas and excited staff. Literacy in 3rd – 5th is going well. Staff will get to go to Indianola where they have already been using the Journeys program so they can ask many questions. Professional development October 16th will be with Melissa Smith from the AEA helping staff better understand Iowa Core and reading portion.

Committee Reports

Carnival. Peggy Lundquist said she will not be able to head up Carnival this year so it is need of a new chair.

Conference Food. There had been a low number of respondents to volunteer to bring food. The board decided to fund Jill Domina to purchase ingredients for spaghetti and chili and volunteers would only then need to supplement with sides and desserts.

Cookie Dough. None.

Movie Night. The license contract expires January 24th. The board decided on a date of November 8th for a movie night with a possibility of also having one December 6th. Sue passed around a list of movie possibilities. The movie night will start at 6pm. Admission will be $1 for adults and $.50 for children, or a food item for the food pantry per person for admission. Concessions will be sold. Heather Kent said she can get hot dogs from Hormel.

Tee Shirts. PTCO partnered with the Booster Club on short sleeved shirts with PTCO getting proceeds from children’s sizes. They were sold for $10. Sue also ordered long sleeved maroon shirts with the new Clarke logo on them which sold for $12 for child sizes and $15 for adult sizes. $555 was made in profit over Homecoming weekend.

Yearbook. Peggy passed around a book showing all of the cover possibilities. Attendees marked their favorites. The cover is due by Nov. 1st. 1 CLARKE ELEMENTARY PTCO MEETING MINUTES October 7th, 2013 Page 1 of 2 Newsletter. Ideas were Movie Night, Vendor Fair, Tee Shirt sales and upcoming field trips.

Vendor Fair. Carrie had secured 10-12 vendors so far and Schwann’s was lined up. This year customers can log in online to purchase food from Schwann’s and a portion of the proceeds of their sales for the entire year will go to PTCO. Schwann’s will also deliver the food right to customers’ homes. LuAnn Bubolz will be taking photos that day, which is new for the fair.

Treasurer’s Report. Tonya asked that she gets a copy of all requisitions to help make the books more accurate. There are some missing for April and May. At the end of August PTCO had about $44,000, which realistically was closer to $26,000 after subtracting funds which were previously committed. Mrs. Kiger explained that the P.O. process had changed and that the School District would need to approve every purchase first before any bills can be submitted. She wasn’t sure yet if purchases made prior to approval would be reimbursed, or if it would just take another couple of steps before it was reimbursed. She said she would find out and let the board know.

Field Trips. Kindergarten requested $500.72 plus mileage for a trip to the Harvest Barn. Third grade requested money for milk that was taken on a trip to the Clarke County Fair Grounds. Both were approved. Mrs. Kiger asked about what happens to funds leftover from the 6th graders when they go to the Middle School. There was discussion of rolling these funds up with the grade into 7th grade and beyond. Tonya will find out if this is a possibility.

New Business. Kim said that she was given a suggestion that if PTCO were looking for an appreciation gift for teachers a useful thing may be iTunes gift certificates. They can be used to buy educational apps on the iPads.

Mrs. Kiger shared enrollment figures. There are 120 Kindergarten students enrolled this year and 89 6th grade students. There was 9.6% increase in growth.

Next Meeting. November 4th at 5:30 in the Elementary Conference Room.

There being no other business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 6:30 pm. Respectfully submitted,

Peggy Lundquist Secretary, Clarke Elementary PTCO
