Masters and Doctoral Assessment on One Page (Humanities)

This is a quick-reference guide. For full, authoritative details consult the Standard Operating Procedures for Higher Degrees

NAC = non-assessing chair

PAC = postgraduate assessment committee

1. Appointment of examiners

 Must occur at least three months before hand-in (hand-in will not be accepted unless examiners appointed)

 For D: 3 external examiners, at least 1 international.

 For M: 2 external examiners, both may be SA-based.

 Full CVs + Nomination of Non-assessing Chair and Assessors Form to be submitted by HOD to PAC via secretary

 Once PAC approves, secretary writes to examiners with appointment forms

2. Initial submission

 Electronic copy by email to secretary

 Hard copies for any examiners who have requested that (secretary will notify the NAC)

 Permission to Submit for Assessment Form

 Affidavit – M and D Submission for Assessment

3. Assessment

 Examiners, due within 6 weeks (Secretary will ensure confirmation of receipt of the document and remind of the due date at 5 weeks)

o Report + forms supplied to the examiner directly by the Secretary

 Supervisor (6 weeks)

o Narrative report summarizing the study and its merits (no form)

 NAC (1 week after receipt of examiners’ and supervisors’ reports)

o Non-Assessing Chair Report – Doctoral Thesis and MA Dissertation

o Where examiners are late, the Secretary will ask the NAC to write to the examiners

o NAC to follow the procedures for ‘integration of assessment results’ in the SOP.

4. Response to PAC feedback  If resubmission, the following to the Secretary:

o Confirmation of corrections made form o Cover letter explaining the changes

o Copies of corrected thesis as required by examiners

 If minor corrections or no corrections:

o Permission to Submit Finally Corrected Study and Confirmation of Research Output form

o Library Submission Form o For D only: Laudatio

o For D only: Abbreviated CV o Copies for Library/Digispace as directed by Library

 All final submissions/resubmissions need to serve at Senate Higher Degrees Committee before students may graduate. Consult PAC deadlines for the next SHDC meeting.
