<p>Masters and Doctoral Assessment on One Page (Humanities)</p><p>All documents referred to below are available at http://www.uj.ac.za/EN/Faculties/humanities/Pages/Post-Graduate-Information-for-Students-and- Staff.aspx</p><p>This is a quick-reference guide. For full, authoritative details consult the Standard Operating Procedures for Higher Degrees</p><p>NAC = non-assessing chair</p><p>PAC = postgraduate assessment committee</p><p>Current PAC secretary = Ms Karin du Plooy, [email protected], 011 559 2573</p><p>1. Appointment of examiners</p><p> Must occur at least three months before hand-in (hand-in will not be accepted unless examiners appointed)</p><p> For D: 3 external examiners, at least 1 international.</p><p> For M: 2 external examiners, both may be SA-based.</p><p> Full CVs + Nomination of Non-assessing Chair and Assessors Form to be submitted by HOD to PAC via secretary</p><p> Once PAC approves, secretary writes to examiners with appointment forms</p><p>2. Initial submission</p><p> Electronic copy by email to secretary</p><p> Hard copies for any examiners who have requested that (secretary will notify the NAC)</p><p> Permission to Submit for Assessment Form</p><p> Affidavit – M and D Submission for Assessment</p><p>3. Assessment</p><p> Examiners, due within 6 weeks (Secretary will ensure confirmation of receipt of the document and remind of the due date at 5 weeks)</p><p> o Report + forms supplied to the examiner directly by the Secretary</p><p> Supervisor (6 weeks)</p><p> o Narrative report summarizing the study and its merits (no form)</p><p> NAC (1 week after receipt of examiners’ and supervisors’ reports)</p><p> o Non-Assessing Chair Report – Doctoral Thesis and MA Dissertation</p><p> o Where examiners are late, the Secretary will ask the NAC to write to the examiners </p><p> o NAC to follow the procedures for ‘integration of assessment results’ in the SOP.</p><p>4. Response to PAC feedback  If resubmission, the following to the Secretary: </p><p> o Confirmation of corrections made form o Cover letter explaining the changes</p><p> o Copies of corrected thesis as required by examiners</p><p> If minor corrections or no corrections:</p><p> o Permission to Submit Finally Corrected Study and Confirmation of Research Output form </p><p> o Library Submission Form o For D only: Laudatio</p><p> o For D only: Abbreviated CV o Copies for Library/Digispace as directed by Library</p><p> All final submissions/resubmissions need to serve at Senate Higher Degrees Committee before students may graduate. Consult PAC deadlines for the next SHDC meeting.</p>
