• A Case Study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling Champion Peter Antonie
A CASE STUDY OF OLYMPIC, WORLD AND COMMONWEALTH SCULLING CHAMPION PETER ANTONIE A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS, SPORTS HUMANITIES/MEDIA, DIVISION OF HEALTH, DESIGN AND SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA ROBIN POKE AUGUST 2006 ii Abstract This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years – from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australia’s greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature – widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonie’s reputation, particularly as it compares with his better- known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport.

NEWSLETTER – DECEMBER 2017 News reviews 2017 World Rowing Award winners revealed The first World Rowing Indoor Championships announced Azou and Janssen head World Rowing’s top 10 list for 2017 A French man and a Dutch woman have taken the top spots in World Rowing’s Top 10 rowers for 2017. Jeremie Azou is the top male and Inge Janssen the top female in a list that includes new rowers who have taken over in the sport following a number of post- Olympic retirements. The indoor rowing appeal and British Rowing Rowers have long embraced – or rather endured – a close relationship to this most intense of exercise machines. But indoor rowing machines are no longer just for rowers cross training. New research from British Rowing reveals that on average there are three indoor rowing machines at every gym across Great Britain and concrete steps are being taken to increase that number. How South Africa is making their boats go faster The simple aim of a rowing coaching is to make boats go faster and South Africa’s national squad programme is certainly picking up speed. At the Olympic level, the first South African boat to compete was the men’s eight in Barcelona in 1992. Twelve years later in Athens, South Africa won its first medal, bronze in the men’s pair. London 2012 saw South Africa win its first gold, in the men’s lightweight four. This success was built on in Rio, with five boats qualifying, all making finals and the men’s pair winning silver. World Rowing’s 2017 Coaches Conference on 7-8 December in London, focused on the theme of using technology and data to make boats go faster.

  • CANOTTAGGIO Enciclopedia Dello Sport Di Bruno Marchesi
Scesero in gara solamente equipaggi maschili.

THE ERA OF POLARIZATION 139. The Next Generation of U.S. Scullers Jim Dietz – Gregg Stone – Larry Klecatsky – Bill Belden – Scott Roop – John Biglow – Paul Enquist Consistent success for the most part eluded American men competing in international sculling in the post-Rosenberg era. Nevertheless, the U.S. produced several unforgettable individuals and enduring stories during the 1970s and „80s. Jim Dietz According to a 1972 feature article in Life Magazine, James William Dietz “was a gangling, uncoordinated 15-year-old when he took up rowing to get out of the shadow of an athletically successful older brother.6828 “Dietz‟s crew experience began in 1964, when he competed for the New York Athletic Club in all classes of rowing and sculling events. As a high school student, he won all United States and Canadian Scholastic Championships in single and double sculls from 1964 through 1967, and won the first Junior World Championship in single sculls at Ratzeburg, Germany in 1967. “During his competitive years, Dietz Ted Nash Collection won forty-five United States and thirty- seven Canadian National Championship In 1971, he set what was then a course record time of 7:02.43 at the Internationale titles. He was a member of almost every 6830 U.S. National Team from 1967 to 1983, Rotsee Regatta. including U.S. Olympic entries in 1972, 1976 and 1980.”6829 All his life, Jimmy Dietz has done everything to the max. He has rowed hard, trained hard, raced hard and talked hard. 6828 Bill Bruns & Co Rentmeester, photographer, The Single Sculler‟s Search for Pain, Life Magazine, April 14, 1972, p.
