Title: The Wednesday Wars Author: Gary D. Schmidt Summary: The Wednesday Wars is about a boy named Holling Hoodhood. Holling just started 7th grade and says his teacher, Mrs. Baker, hates his guts. He says this because on the first day of school when Mrs. Baker called his name for attendance (which doesn’t only tell your name, but also were you live), and discovered that he doesn’t attend Saint Adelbert’s or Temple Beth- El, she didn’t seem too thrilled. It meant that on Wednesday afternoons instead of going to Catechism or Hebrew School, Holling would be staying at school with Mrs. Baker. Every Wednesday when all of the other 7th graders at Camillo Junior High school left for religious class, Mrs. Baker would come up with a list of chores for Holling to take care of in the classroom. He had to clean the chalkboards (usually twice to make sure there were no streaks), pound the erasers against the side of the school (creating clouds of chalk dust that would get in his hair, eyes and mouth), sweep the cobwebs off the asbestos ceiling tiles, wash all of the lower windows in the classroom, and clean the coat room (which is where all of the leftover and forgotten lunches would be left to grow moldy and smelly). He had to do all of this without complaining because if was for the “good of the family”, according to his father. Mr. Hoodhood is an architect at Hoodhood and Associates which is one of two firms that Baker Sporting Emporium is going to be choosing after the first week of October.
