They were married in 1965 and brought 2 sons in to the Peter & Doreen Terekoff in memory of world, David and James. L David & Dr. James Terekoff Both boys went on to be highly successful students. David pursued his secondary education at the University of in the faculty of Medicine. James graduated with his Doctor of Optometry after completing his four year degree at Waterloo and an internship in Oxford England.

Long before their time, tragedy struck both boys with the untimely passing of David in 1987 and James in 1996. Despite these devastating loses, Peter and Doreen continued to share their love of education with their students and the community as volunteers. Doreen was very involved in diabetic education and counseling, and Peter was part of several high level boards including the Swan Valley Credit Union and the Swan Valley Co-op.

In memory of David and James, the Terekoffs started two memorial scholarship funds in David each of their sons names. Keeping in line with their high standards of educational excellence, the recipients of the cholarship David Terekoff Memorial Scholarship must also be a recipient of the Governor Generals Academic Funds Medal, having graduated with the highest grade S point average. They attended Cherban Endowment Fund for school in Winnipegosis and as young boys worked on the docks in the fishing Agriculture & Rural Living L industry and later in their life they went Port of Churchill commercial fishing. From here the Grain Elevator brothers continued their hard work ethics and moved to Churchill, where they worked at the grain terminal at the Port of Churchill for approximately 25 years.

From the wages they earned here Sandy & Marvin sent money home to their parents to help care for them. As young men the Cherbans always thought they wanted to farm, so in February of 1970 they purchased, with cash, 3 quarters of land (480 acres), located 8 1/2 miles north east of Birch The Cherban Farm River. NE of Birch River Home built by the brothers The Cherban brothers knew very little about farming and were quickly taken under the wings of two neighboring families, the Bohnhardts and the Thompsons. The Cherban Brothers Marvin & Sandy (Alexander) With the help and guidance of their local community, the Cherbans were successful farmers, taking care of the land until their retirement at which time they rented out the land. The three quarters stayed in their hands until their passing; Marvin passing away in 2012 and Sandy (Alexander) in 2013.

The Cherban’s lasting legacy to the family, friends and valley that had become home for them was to continue to support local agriculture, education, research and skill development. Through this request, the proceeds of the Cherban’s estate was donated to the Manitoba Department of Agriculture and with their support half of the Cherban’s estate was donated locally to the Community Foundation of Swan Valley. This newly created endowment fund will continue to support local valley residents in pursuit of agriculture excellence, whether it be for education or community economic development and rural living.

Although they are not here with us today, the Community Foundation of Swan Valley would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Cherban brothers for investing in us and we look forward to honoring their legacy.

A very special thank you also to the family of Herb Bohnhardt for bringing the details of this very special story forward and for your tireless efforts to bring a portion of the Cherban legacy back to the Swan Valley.
