Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is described as; “Passion, dedication and a commitment to community are the driving forces behind the volunteers who receive the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. The medal recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields and pays tribute to the dedication and commitment of volunteers. They embody the caring country we aspire to build.” Congratulations Doug. eport From The Board Lorne Henkelman R Chair, CFSV Board of Directors Philanthropy has been described as ‘the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people’. Since our beginnings in 2005, the people of and those with connection to the Swan River Valley have demonstrated a wonderful example of philanthropy in action. The CFSV is once again pleased to be able to report on another year of significant growth. During the past fiscal year, your Foundation has received just over $547,000 in new contributions and has now reached $2.422 million in contributions since 2005. As well, over the past year, the market value of the assets of the Foundation has increased to $2.948 million. The Foundation has earned a 9.59% rate of return on its investments over the past 5 years. And, for the first time in our history, the Foundation was able to distribute over $100,000 in annual grants and scholarships during the year, bringing our total giving since 2005 to $686,000. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to the CFSV, whether with your financial contributions or with your volunteer time and energy. CFSV offered two granting opportunities to the community, one in the fall of 2018 and then in the spring of 2019. In total the fund was able to meet the needs of 37 non-profit or charity organizations looking for support to expand programming, purchase equipment, assist with education, issue scholarships & awards or rejuvenate infrastructure. They were married in 1965 and brought 2 sons in to the Peter & Doreen Terekoff in memory of world, David and James. L David & Dr. James Terekoff Both boys went on to be highly successful students. David pursued his secondary education at the University of Manitoba in the faculty of Medicine. James graduated with his Doctor of Optometry after completing his four year degree at Waterloo and an internship in Oxford England. Long before their time, tragedy struck both boys with the untimely passing of David in 1987 and James in 1996. Despite these devastating loses, Peter and Doreen continued to share their love of education with their students and the community as volunteers. Doreen was very involved in diabetic education and counseling, and Peter was part of several high level boards including the Swan Valley Credit Union and the Swan Valley Co-op. In memory of David and James, the Terekoffs started two memorial scholarship funds in David each of their sons names. Keeping in line with their high standards of educational excellence, the recipients of the cholarship David Terekoff Memorial Scholarship must also be a recipient of the Governor Generals Academic Funds Medal, having graduated with the highest grade S point average. They attended Cherban Endowment Fund for school in Winnipegosis and as young boys worked on the docks in the fishing Agriculture & Rural Living L industry and later in their life they went Port of Churchill commercial fishing. From here the Grain Elevator brothers continued their hard work ethics and moved to Churchill, where they worked at the grain terminal at the Port of Churchill for approximately 25 years. From the wages they earned here Sandy & Marvin sent money home to their parents to help care for them. As young men the Cherbans always thought they wanted to farm, so in February of 1970 they purchased, with cash, 3 quarters of land (480 acres), located 8 1/2 miles north east of Birch The Cherban Farm River. NE of Birch River Home built by the brothers The Cherban brothers knew very little about farming and were quickly taken under the wings of two neighboring families, the Bohnhardts and the Thompsons.
