Planning for Offshore Oil Development and Other DCRA File Photographs, 1977-1978

ACQUISITION: The images were apparently discarded by DCRA (Department of Community and Regional Affairs) during the 1999 move from the building on Third St., Juneau. Ron Klein “rescued” the images and donated the collection to the Alaska State Library in 2001. Accession no. 2002-53.

ACCESS: The photos may be viewed, however, the images may not be photocopied.

COPYRIGHT: Request for permission to publish or reproduce material from the collection should be discussed with the Librarian.

PROCESSING: The images were organized according to place, primarily communities, projects, and source. Some of the photographs were used for publication; they are mounted and taped to boards. Some boards have been removed; all should be completed after information on boards is transcribed. Slides and photographs are housed in mylar and acid-free folders.

BACKGROUND NOTE

Many of the photographs were collected from various sources for publication of a book, Planning for Offshore Oil Development, by Lois S. Kramer, Veronica C. Clark, and George J. Cannelos published in 1978. The rest of the images may have been DCRA file photos deemed not worthy of saving as the department moved to another building in 1999.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS NOTE

The collection includes photographs of activity and personnel in the oil drilling industry. Several Alaskan communities are represented. Places photographed are primarily on Prince of Wales Island and include, Barrow, Craig, Hydaburg, Kasaan, Klawock, Point Baker, Port Protection, Thorne Bay, and others. Most of the photographs were collected for the publication of the book, Planning for Offshore Oil Development, in 1978. The bulk of the photographs are from the 1970s although some may be earlier.
