Training Management Practical Exercise
Scenario: You are a platoon leader in an Infantry Brigade Combat Team rifle company. Your commander has given you the company’s Full Spectrum Operations METL, which includes these tasks:
Bravo Company Mission Essential Tasks Conduct an Attack Conduct Tactical Movement Conduct Troop-Leading Procedures Conduct Route Reconnaissance
Your commander’s intent, in addition to maintaining Soldiers’ basic infantry skills, is to qualify your platoon for fair weather, daytime use of a weapon new to your unit, the M320 grenade launcher. The M320 is to replace the M203 grenade launcher.
Your platoon consists of three rifle squads and a weapons squad (nine men per squad), and the commander has attached a six-man mortar section. Two riflemen and one mortarman are on leave. The M203 range on your installation is at an annex six miles from the main garrison. Range support vehicles (to carry weapons and supplies) are available. There is an adequate supply of Training Practice Target (TPT) and High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEPD) types of 40 mm rounds fired by the M320. Tactical vehicles to transport your personnel are available. You may choose to road march your platoon to or from the range.
Your notional assessment, made with inputs from your platoon sergeant and your squad leaders, is shown on the practical exercise worksheet in the “Your Current Rating” column for Infantry Rifle Platoon Tasks.
Your task: Prepare for the Platoon Leader’s Dialog, where you will present the following to the commander and first sergeant.
1. Indicate the platoon tasks you plan to train by checking the boxes on the Infantry Rifle Platoon Tasks worksheet. You will train/not train (due to resource constraints), or not train (you will risk not training so you can complete higher priority training). 2. Your estimate of the time required to train platoon tasks. 3. The resources your platoon will require to train platoon tasks. 4. Your understanding of the operational environment in which you will train. 5. Your determination of the tasks that will not be trained, and your assessment of the risks of not training those tasks—and appropriate mitigation.
You should consider the commander’s intent, the company’s Full Spectrum Operations METL, and your platoon’s capabilities.
You have 30 minutes to complete this exercise. Practical Exercise Worksheet
