Allen 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\gm\24763dg11.docx 11 12 Introduced in the House on April 13, 2011 13 Adopted by the House on April 13, 2011 14 15 Summary: Southside High School Forensic Team 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 4/13/2011 House Introduced and adopted ( House Journalpage 13) 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 4/13/2011 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE SOUTHSIDE HIGH 12 SCHOOL FORENSIC TEAM OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR 13 A PRIZEWINNING YEAR, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE 14 TEAM MEMBERS AND COACH ERICKSON BYNUM FOR 15 THEIR DISTINGUISHED PERFORMANCE IN GARNERING 16 THE 2011 CLASS AAA OVERALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP 17 TITLE. 18 19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 20 Representatives are pleased to learn that the Southside High 21 School forensic team has taken top honors in the state forensic 22 competition for the third consecutive year; and 23 24 Whereas, in another stunning display of oratory skill, the 25 Southside Tigers defeated the forensic teams from Riverside and 26 Hillcrest high schools and Bob Jones Academy to win yet another 27 state title; and 28 29 Whereas, the team also won the South Carolina National Forensic 30 League District Championship for the fourth year in a row, and 31 team captain Paavan Gami won the South Carolina Student of the 32 Year award; and 33 34 Whereas, team members Andrew Bell and Blair Brewer took top 35 honors at the state championship in publicforum debate; Paavan 36 Gami won the state championships in both international and 37 United States extemporaneous speaking; and David Wu won the 38 state title in Lincoln Douglas debate; and 39 40 Whereas, under the skillful leadership of Erickson Bynum, a 1996 41 graduate from Southside High School who participated on the 42 forensic team for four years under the team’s founder, Truman

[4075] 2 1 Humbert, the school’s current team is ranked eightyseventh out of 2 the three thousand forensic teams nationwide; and 3 4 Whereas, after graduating from Morehouse College in Atlanta, 5 Georgia, Coach Bynum returned to teach English at his high 6 school alma mater, and this year he will receive his first diamond 7 award for outstanding coaching and dedication to forensic 8 competition at the national competition; and 9 10 Whereas, qualifying to participate in the National Forensic League 11 “Denim and Diamonds” National Tournament to be held from 12 June 1318 in Dallas, Texas, nine students on the team have the 13 opportunity to attend: Andrew Bell, Blair Brewer, Sarina Dodhia, 14 Paavan Gami, Anurag Khandavalli, Aahil Merchant, Abhi Pandya, 15 Anand Shah, and Francine Tamakloe; and 16 17 Whereas, in a discipline that requires hours of intense practice and 18 preparation, the Southside High School forensic team members 19 have brought great pride and recognition to their community and 20 their school, and the members of the South Carolina House of 21 Representatives will expect to hear of the successes of these 22 talented and dedicated students in the future. Now, therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 27 by this resolution, recognize and honor the Southside High School 28 forensic team of Greenville County for a prizewinning year, and 29 congratulate the team members and Coach Erickson Bynum for 30 their distinguished performance in garnering the 2011 Class AAA 31 Overall State Championship title. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 34 Principal Carlos Brooks and Coach Erickson Bynum. 35 XX 36
