Alden Update – November 4, 2013

Hello Alden Families:

Three parts to a successful education include the school, parents/community and students. We are fortunate here at Alden to have all three. Our teachers work hard every single day to create a safe, learning environment for your child. The students come prepared and ready to learn on a daily basis and the parents support us in many different ways. Thank you for all that you do.

Governor Duval Patrick has declared November as "Family Literacy Month". The purpose of family literacy is to develop better readers, writers, speakers and thinkers. Literacy is strengthened by engaging children in meaningful literacy activities such as reading and discussing books or articles, writing for many different purposes, and taking the time to enjoy literacy as a family. Attached is a calendar filled with recommended literacy activities to help celebrate Family Literacy Month. Thank you to our reading specialist for putting the calendar together.

DHS is working with Play Ball, an organization trying to buy sports equipment for kids in the inner city. The goal is to collect 300 youth footballs. If you have an old football not in use, please consider donating it to this great cause. There is a drop box located outside the main office at Alden.

Halloween Candy Giveback continues through Wednesday, November 6th at DSU! Kids tell us Halloween is all about dressing up in costumes, collecting a ton of candy and spending the night with friends. While it is fun to fill the pillow case, the candy coma that follows is not necessary the memorable reward. Back again by popular demand, the DSU will collect candy for Cape Cod Cares for Troops. Let's see if we can beat our 300 pound record from last year! Sponsored by Duxbury Children's Dentistry. DSU Camp returns Friday November 8th from 10:30am – 5:00pm. All Duxbury youth are invited to attend. Camp returns for early release day, November 8th for Chandler, Alden and DMS students. Make your vote count with majority favorites for games, relays and scavenger hunts and swimming at Percy Walker Pool. Full day of activities planned from 10:30am - 5pm. Sign up at [email protected]. A minimum of 15 students needed by Wednesday November 6th for the camp to go ahead.
