2003 Convention & ALC Delegates from 20 of our 30 Locals were present in Winston-Salem for the Annual Convention & ALC. The final Delegate count was 85, with 9 Locals having full votes (5); and 20 Locals certified. We were pleased to have Dick Koob, president of NAIFA and Mark Johnson, past president of NAIFA with us for the Convention. The Foundation Auction raised over $4,700 for educational grants in the coming year. Rachel Collins, recipient of the 2003 Foundation Essay Contest scholarship was present and read her essay to the group. The essay will be published in the next issue of Tarheel Financial Advisor.

Underwriter of the Year Jim Ollis was 2003 recipient of the Underwriter of the Year Award. Jim is a long time member of the association and is currently serving as president of the Southeast AIFA. Jim represents Mass Mutual from offices in Laurinburg.
Bylaw Changes The proposed bylaw changes submitted by the Resolutions and Bylaws Committee were approved. Appreciation was extended to Ken Sherlin and his committee for their work on updating the bylaws. Contact the State Office if you are interested in receiving a copy of the updated bylaws.
Awards Jack Eulitt Professional Development Award: Medium Locals, Fayetteville AIFA; Large Locals, Charlotte AIFA. Ray King Community Service Award: Medium Locals, Burlington AIFA; Large Locals, Western NC AIFA. Public Relations Award, Western NC AIFA. The W. F. Yates Memorial Award presented to the Onslow County Association with an increase of 142% over last years final number. William H. Andrews Memorial Award presented to the Triangle AIFA with an increase of 12 members over last year. The NCAIFA Membership Chairman’s Award is presented to the association chairman in the three size categories for having the highest percentage increase of the local’s current year goal. <30 Members Award goes to Onslow County AIFA; 30-89 Members Award goes to Paul Farr, Northeastern AIFA; 90+ Members Award goes to Todd Grantham of Triangle AIFA. Dorothy Austell Area VP Leadership Award to Frankie Harlow. Pete Peterson Association Achievement Award to Fayetteville and Western NC.
Financial Services Symposium The Association is sponsoring our fourth annual Financial Services Symposium on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. SAVE THE DATE, more details to follow. JJ Summerell is chairing this year’s committee and a great group of speakers are being arranged. Jack Wardlaw Salesperson of the Year Award A new award, funded from the estate of Jack Wardlaw, was presented by Johnny Wardlaw to Gregory Williams of Northwestern Mutual in Raleigh. The award is intended to recognize agents with less than 4 years in the business for their life insurance sales. Gregory joined Northwestern Mutual in October of 2000. In 2001 he was Rookie of the Year for the Condrey Agency and in 2002 he was ranked in the top ten of all second year Northwestern Mutual representatives in the Southern Region. Financial Status Thanks to the successful 2003 Financial Services Seminar and the dues increase that was approved last October, the Association will end the year with a positive cash flow despite another decline in our overall membership numbers.
NAIFA Convention The official call to the NAIFA Annual Convention has been sent to all Locals. Remind your members to register now. The Convention is September 13-17 in Kansas City. If you have questions about the convention, call Roger Taylor.
E&O Insurance Remind members of the NCAIFA Errors and Omissions Insurance available to members. Call the Association office 919-839-5828 to obtain your application.
E. Dawn Nuckels Award The AIFA PAC awards are based on the calendar year. The E. Dawn Nuckels Award is based on 20 % of members contributing a minimum of $50; per capita contribution of $20; 100% of Local Board members are members of PAC; attendance at ALC; one meeting during the year dedicated to PAC; and must have a local committee. Last year North Carolina had nine winners. ADD YOUR LOCAL TO THE LIST for 2003.
NCFREE NCFREE will be holding Regional Political Briefings at 10 locations throughout the state during September and October. This is an opportunity to learn more about statewide and local candidate races and the position of the candidate on pro-business issues. Local Presidents are being encouraged to attend and NCAIFA will pay the registration fee. If you would like more information on NCFREE or the briefings, contact the State Office.
2004 Convention Mark your calendars for the combined ALC and Convention scheduled for July 14-15, 2004 at the Adam’s Mark in Winston-Salem. October Board of Directors Meeting The October Board of Directors meeting will be held in Raleigh on Wednesday, October 8 at 1:00 PM. If you are interested in attending, call the State Office to register and receive the meeting packet.
High School Essay Contest The Foundation is again sponsoring a high school essay contest with a $1,000 college scholarship as the first prize. Information will be sent to all Local leadership and to high school guidance counselors throughout the state. For a copy of the information and criteria, contact the state office.
Underwriter of the Year Chairman, Roger Taylor reminds everyone to consider submitting recommendations for 2004 Underwriter of the Year. The deadline is April 30 and an application form is required. Call the State Office to get a copy of the form.
Quality Improvement: In order to strengthen our association we need members’ input on how we are doing to meet your needs. Please submit recommendations or suggestions to the State Office. They will be referred to the appropriate committee for review and action. Remember-- Together Everyone Achieves More.
